'Disrespectful' driver overtakes hearse near Spalding''

I know it is socially wrong, and I've never done it, but say you were late etc and it was safe to do so, would you?

This ^. If it were me in the box (or a family member) I would not want people to form an orderly queue behind me, I would want them to go past and get on with their lives as normal and if that means overtaking on a single carriageway road bouncing off the rev limiter in 2nd gear then so be it. In fact my immediate family have been told that the hearse carting me off must travel at normal speeds with the traffic flow and not at 20mph like they usually do.

I think that’s a given. From the story that moron had overtaken and forced his way in between the hearse and the other cars in the convoy. No harm in passing slowly on a dual carriageway not that I’ve ever seen one on anything other than local roads.

That's my position above.

On a dual - yup, 2nd lane to pass (but don't be a dick and end up in the middle of the procession!).

On a single - you have a distorted view of your own importance.

Yes, dual carriageway/motorway/overtaking lane but no on a single carriageway but only because the likelyhood of being able to do so without having to overtake the whole courtege unlikely. And it would just make you look a dick if you carved up a courtege.

Motorway = yes (for overall safety).
Dual = no.
Single = no.

Sparing a few minutes for someone's last day is no big deal.

I once pulled out of a petrol station slightly distracted still faffing (I know) with seatbelt/phone/something. With a chirp of wheel spin I eased myself into a tight gap in the traffic, aiming a cheeky no-eye-contact wave to the driver who had “let me in”, before realising to my horror that I’d split a funeral cortège.

Seconds later an overtaking opportunity presented itself. I took it without hesitation.

...the defence argues that removing a vehicle from a funeral cortège in which it doesn’t belong may be the only valid reason for overtaking a hearse...

I used live near a racehorse stable in York. You could tell the horses 'cos they wore green rubber spats.

Start a car within earshot and it was horse in the air time. The drill was pull over, engine off and do nothing until Dobbin GTi was practically out of sight.

Someone in Marple overtook a horse. Picture a yellow VW Beetle with a horse through the windscreen as far as its chest and its head through the rear window.

The horse had to be destroyed on site. The girl driving the VW suffered horrendous injuries and wound up crippled. The girl horse rider wasn't much better off.

The only kind of 'oss I go past is a police nag.

It's always a moral dilemma but the reverse actually happened to me a few years ago. I was on the a66 on the way over to the lakes and on a dual carriageway section I was overtaken by a hearse. A converted jag xe, fully loaded (and I'm not talking about its spec) pushing on as i was observing the speed limit. It was one of those 'is this actually happening' moments.

I'd overtake one but slowly and carefully. Herses can be quite flighty.

Is it possible that the driver overtook slow moving traffic and suddenly thought "st...in the middle of a cortege". If that was the case you might possibly then just gently overtake the hearse too so as not to end up in the middle.

However I suspect not as driving a vehicle like that with a fairly high driving position, he must have seen it beforehand.

Grade A ahole I suspect...

They’re already late. I don’t see why I should be as well.
