But not quite how you'd imagine.

We finish on Friday, small business of about 25 people, 7 girls and the rest blokes.

TD gave all the girls in the office a bottle of prosecco earlier and now the MD has just given all the girls vouchers for an expensive spa day each. Us blokes? Nothing.

I might start wearing a skirt to work. biggrin

Provided your willing to give the Boss a BJ after the office party I'd say you're entitled too.

Your Boss knows the spa voucher will make them special and stop them grumbling for a while about the lack of wage parity.

You could start wearing a skirt, but are you happy to get paid less?

Joking aside, I’m pretty sure wage parity is ok here to be honest.

Same problem here, don't get me started on the dress code. Guys have to wear business casual. Women whatever the hell they like, I've seen women dressed like they are going clubbing and others dressed like they have just got out of bed and still wearing their PJ's...

And in summer pissing flip flops and sandles, I don't want to see your manky feet.

If a guy dresses too casual or with the wrong foot wear, you get dragged into a meeting room for a chat.

Same thing here with dress code, Business casual so blokes have to wear 'proper' shoes, trousers and shirt or smart jumper with no logo.
Women can wear any tops, jeans, leggings, leather trousers. I am all for equality but this is going too far the other way.

It has been mentioned about the disparity before and the response was it is easier to let them wear it rather than have them moan about not being comfortable, too hot etc..

Playing devil's advocate.....

Why should "the boss" have to give everybody a present? Maybe he just likes the women more than the men? Maybe he thinks they work harder? I don't know, there could be umpteen reasons, however the feeling that "everybody must get a token of goodwill of equal value" is misplaced, i think.

I'm also a bit "meh" about the dress code. If women want to wear strappy tops, miniskirts, and high heels I don't mind.

AS with everything in life...

You would have a claim for sex discrimination and you could maybe win your case.

However in the real world you’d just get managed out of the business for some made up reason

Discrimination goes on regardless of what laws are brought in

The boss doesn't have to give everyone a present at all, however if he chooses to give present to only those of a certain sex and all those who are that sex then surely that's pretty close to being sexist.

I think the dress code issue is one that needs attention by some companies. One of my female friends had a colleague who got a ticking off from a femal manger for not wearing a tie at work. Well dressed guy apparently and not at all a scruff. My female friend was sat there whilst this 'ticking off' was happening wearing her normal smart casual clothes and her and 2 of the other girls there had flip flops on. Never a word said about that.

Interestingly enough though even the girls lost respect for that manager afterwards. Nobody wins when theres blatant sexism going on - no matter how small the issue is.

Its a bit like that in my office, except its verbal.

Theres 2 men (41 and 38) and 8 women aged between 26 and 50 something.... The stuff they come out with would make Chubby Brown blush, yet if either of the men said such things, we'd be in front of HR pretty damned quickly!

I think that's what OP is saying, sexism. Some people work harder than others. That's not gender related. Some people are just nicer than others. Also not gender related. Deciding that people work harder and are more likeable because they are women is sexist.

That's fair enough, they have to put up with your ugly mug all year round, they probably deserve a bit of pampering!

Same job & same level = they will be paid the same.

There is no gender pay gap in the UK for same job, level and industry.

Weirdly there is some correlation between the headline gender pay gap and the global gender gap index, but it is that the more equal the society, the higher the headline gender pay gap. The countries with the 'best' gender pay gap are Egypt, Nigeria and the UAE. The UK is one of the 'worst'.

'Like for like' pay gap in the UK is less than 1%

We're a small tech business so the company structure is pretty flat, roles and responsibilities are a mix from normal grunt to pretty senior.

I don't have an issue with not getting a present from the MD, I've never expected one at Christmas in all the places I've worked, although I have had one or two over the years at previous employers.

It's just today it really struck me as odd that 2 separate members of the board, and at 2 different times of the day, decided to single out only the women as worthy of receiving a Christmas gift for their efforts. The Spa days from the MD were given out under the understanding that they should also keep it quite from the blokes (which they didn't).

Will you be telling all the girls if the company then gives the 18 blokes a big Christmas bonus, or takes you all out for a night on the town and leaves the girls behind?

Ha! That's good point. I do feel sorry for them. At least I'm out on the road a lot so my office appearances are limited.

"Older" directors by any chance?

Whole thing sounds bizarre. I mean I get the idea that a role or a particular person may get a present but the way you're telling it you may as well have a table with women and men on it each doing the same job and the directors came out and handed each woman a present.

In 2017 that's a bit weird at the least confused

I'd expect the girls to be joining in with both to be honest.
