Ask a delivery driver anything, anything at all......
Discussion
I used to be a delivery driver for an electrical wholesaler in Stockport in 1973.
One day I was taking a delivery of 50 brand new 21" Bush colour TV's to a customer in Bolton (Colour TV's had only just recently come out, so they were selling like hot cakes) in my LWB Transit van when the back doors flew open and three of them fell out and smashed to smithereens on the M62.

My boss wasn't best pleased to say the least.
Happy days......Spending three hours sunbathing in a park en route when I didn't have a lot on.

Used to be a delivery driver for a supermarket.
Hated working sundays but there used to be a customer that came to door in next to nothing. (Female!) everyone used to delight in getting her delivery. How gutted we were when the catchment area for the store changed and that postcode went to another store.

Average number of deliveries per day?
Is your route automatically planned out with sat nags?
Do you have to work until all deliveries are completed?
Furthest you've travelled for 1 delivery?
Do you take the van home?
20 avg in a morning shift - 7 to 12. Includes 2 store deliveries. Is your route automatically planned out with sat nags?

Route planned for you with approx drop times. Have to text customers before you arrive. Cannot deviate from scheduled drops, can go a different way if you want, but have to do the drops in order.
Have to finish deliveries if possible as another person takes van after me for the afternoon/evening shift so HAS to be back at certain time. (What's left gets put onto other driver but that's rare).
My area is a designated area so never huge distances.
Fortunately never asked to take van home. Hate all those vans parked everywhere on residential streets !!
Why does an express guaranteed overnight delivery take 34 f
g days?
And no, this was not during summer in the high Arctic.

I'm just the delivery driver - how the f
k do i know ?!
Seriously though - you get given stuff to deliver, you quite often have no idea what you are delivering, what, if any, stories are behind the delivery - cock ups/cancelled orders/breakages/returned items/misold/etc,etc,etc..........another day, another package to deliver.

Why are some streets numbered "even on the left, odd on the right" and then the reverse just round the corner, and some streets in numerical order 1,2,3...? Who plans this sort of thing?
I deliver for a florist. Pretty busy this week , 866 miles in 7 days in our designated area. Even sat-nav doesn't help much when it's pitch dark and the bas*ard hasn't bothered with a number on his gate, or has the number on the front door at the end of a 100-yard drive. Halfwits.
Even worse - people who fork out £150k for a new self-build and then don't allow the finance for the drive so it's a rutted muddy track fiull of potholes. A*seholes.
I hate my customers. Merry Xmas.

Now we're talking.
You'd be amazed at how many properties don't have numbers on them at all. And then their neighbours don't either.
Worst are those b
ds who wan't to call their house 'Little Poppy Cottage ' or something and have a s
t sign somewhere that's not visible from the pavement. Therefore you have to trundle up people's drives trying to find any form of signage.
As to the number conventions used, think that's down to the council - can't be blamed on the delivery drivers this time !!
