Why do you get paid loads of money NOT to farm a field right to the edges ?
you know, near streams and rivers etc.

Also, why do farmers ( usually tennent farmers )feel its ok to spread grade 3-4 crappy "wood chip" all over their fields knowing its contaminated and utter crap ?

thx smile

Idle is around 600 rpm max around 2400rpm. Eletrics control the rpm as it needs the power.

We are not allowed to crop land within 2 meters of a hedge and 3 meters of a water course. It's to 'protect' the environment. No chemicals or fertiliser can find its way into water courses. Some chemicals have larger 'buffer zones' to keep them away from water.

Some farmers get paid to let waste company's get shot of there crap on land. Land needs organic matter to grow better crops but there is a few things I wouldn't let ne'er my land.

I'm not trying to have a dig(excuse the pun), Ive got a wee bit of land myself that I'm trying to eke a living from and looking at alternatives to traditional land use so just picking your brain.

Could your business survive without subsidies?
If yes, what would you have to do different?
Why don't you do that now?

Why do we give you millions and millions of pounds to grow nothing?

Also what does this mean from the CAP search page

Berry Gardens Growers Ltd TN12 TONBRIDGE £0.00 £0.00 £4,528,815.39 £4,528,815.39 RPA Details

http://cap-payments.defra.gov.uk/SearchResults.asp...

Does that mean the government has give £4.5m to a Tonbridge concern to grow berries?

Surely market forces should be at work?

In the way I farm at the moment I couldn't continue without subsidies, but with a lot of changes I would still continue to farm. I'd drop employee's and do a smaller area myself with the family rent out some land, maybe sell some to clear dept? I don't do that at the moment because I need land and livestock numbers to justify the cost of equipment.

I farm beef cows and a bit of arable. Yes people have been asked to remove themselves, it looks great but a field where a lot of machinery is working in is not a play ground!

Right... I live next to a field worked by a near by Tennant farmer, every year he puts sheep on it about late November, they come down off the hills and the lowland farmers near us have them over winter and he has them over summer. (the previous Tennant told me that), i think they're preggars too, but the last couple of years quite a fee have been lame, there is at least 4 this year who don't have 4 working legs. I rang the farmer because one of the sheep looks in real agony, he didn't seem that bothered...

My questions are, a what point to you cull a lame sheep? And how do i tell if they're pregnant, my fil says they put an ink pad on the ram and the ones with the blobs of ink on their arses have seem the ram (so to speak.) seems pretty undignified to me.

The price we receive for our produce simple is not enough to cover the costs of production most of the time. With out subsides the price of food would need to rise a lot. The government would prefer to have food security and have control of how the countries food is produced. I agree that total amount farmers get should be capped to a certain amount and that the land that we are paid for should grow a crop not sit idle. But at the same time a few empty patches of land is great for the wildlife. A lot of food produced in other countries are not to produced to the same standards as we are held to in the U.K. So they can produce food cheaper but would you really like to eat it?
