I have enjoyed the other threads (especially the farmer) so thought I would do the same.

Seeing as everything is becoming automated.. is the AI industry the one to be in for big bucks? Or will it all crash for fear of creating a real life skynet?

At the moment the standard dictionary definition works quite well - "the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior."
It doesn't cover everything by a long way but is a good starting point for most discussions. From here simple boundaries can be set instead of jumping straight to killer robots.

Yes the future is AI for most industries. Greater automation will be the easiest product to sell to big business as it doesn’t change their mode of thinking. The biggest risk next year is not Skynet (and I would argue this is already in the works) but rather the egomanic in the White House being close to the Nuclear trigger.

Maybe being pedantic but shouldn't "machine" be replaced by "programme"?

So current AI is basically a faster, more complex version of what keen kids were programming in basic in the early 1980’s? If, then, else?

Sorry, I think the term AI has been hijacked.

I think it has been hijacked. In the old days the closest thing was an Expert System.

While there is a lot of hype around AI, it is something different from the 80s. New approaches to algorithms is just he past 3-5 years are creating some fundamentally different outcomes. The best place to look for examples is the work carried out at Google Deep Mind.

I've worked in this field for the last 8 months.

Every consultant I have met knows nothing about AI and is pushing an expensive snakeoil.

There was a thread on here a few years back were a few seo consultants where touting their wares.

One chap pops up and states why if you know so much about seo why don't you set up your own sites and sell the clicks.

Not one could offer a decent answer. The chap who posted the question was earning 10k plus a week I believe selling clicks!

My own opinion is that true AI does not yet exist. In its place we have complex models and decision trees, nothing more.

I think it depends on your criteria for intelligence. There are a couple of quite scary new programmes out there.
One learnt to play “Go” from first principals. The world’s leading players can’t beat it and don’t fully understand its strategies.
https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/10/18...
Deep Mind taught itself to play chess in 72 hours to Grand Master level. It is doing it supposedly without using brute force.

But they all still fail the most stringent Turing test.

No, it shouldn’t, it’s nothing to do with programmes.

What are you working on at the moment?

I agree with you. There is alot of BS in the space right especially from some of the really big industry players. We have an expression “When you are raising money from VCs, say AI, when you are hiring data scientists, say machine Learning.” Not the most pithy saying but accurate here.

I am not so concered by if something could be considered as true AI, or when the singularity might be coming. These are fun topics to ponder but better answered by SciFi. I am more interested in direct application where there can be a meaningful impact.

20 years ago when I started in the field it was just a case of building an algorythm to solve a problem. Machine learning is not new, just the hype around it.

If you were skynet, and going to send a cybernetic killing machine back in time to kill the mother of the future resistance in the USA, why would you give it an Austrian accent?
