Best Man Speech for 2nd Time Around - Help
Discussion
Just after a bit of help. I've been asked by my closest friend to be his best man at his upcoming wedding. It's second time around for him, first marriage ended through no fault of his own. He has two lovely children with his first wife, aged 13 and 10. His soon to be 2nd wife has not been married before, and has no children. I am starting to get a speech together and trying to find a way of getting across how central to his world his children are, without making his new wife seem less important. Because it's second time around, I'm not bothered about bawdy stories about his past, we're mid forties now and that's been covered first time around. His children and their soon to be step mum get on brilliantly, so I want to try and get across how they've all gelled together so well. I've got some (to me anyway) funny bits and pieces already in place, so this is the bit where I want to get a few dusty eyes in the room.
Any ideas, phrases or experiences of similar all gratefully received.

Hi my ex and I divorced 3 years ago . Mildy acrimonious initially but we both got over ourselves and got on with things. My daughter (age 13) went to his wedding a few weeks ago and got quite upset about the content of the best mans speach. He got into how they both met (affair behind my back) how she was the best thing that ever happened to him etc and generally didn't give a s
t that his daughter was sat there listening. Any way avoid stuff like that and your plan to ensure his kids are included sounds like a good one

That's exactly the sort of thing I want to avoid. Fortunately there was no affair etc when they met, but I'm very conscious not to be insensitive to how the children may be feeling on the day. Even though it's the bride's big day, the children should feel just as included IMHO.
t that his daughter was sat there listening. Any way avoid stuff like that and your plan to ensure his kids are included sounds like a good one Mention something about how brilliant his new wife is at making his kids feel good, and maybe say something about how well the kids have taken to her and she has been another role model in their lives?
I suppose you have to also remember that whatever you say can be innocently twisted in the mind of a child when it is repeated back to their mother..

Myself and my sister (both in our 30's at the time) very nearly walked out of my dad's reception for his second marriage when his best man started to talk about things that went on between my dad and his new wife, way back in the day (we already knew that there was a past so it wasn't a shock, however it wasn't appropriate either with us 2 there) whilst he was still married to my mum and both my sister and I were children, I received shocked glances from a few people too.

"So the last time x got married I was an usher, and this time I've been upgraded to Best Man... by the time the third marriage comes around I'm expecting a spot in the bridal suite"
The outcome of this joke depends on a number of factors, obviously...

Do the normal best man stuff then towards the end do a short piece on the children and how they and his new wife get on well etc..
"I would also like to mention Bob's children, Wayne and Waynetta. I can say that they have forged a great relationship with Sue and enjoy their time spent with her and their Dad and it's great to see them both here today enjoying their father's marriage to a wonderful lady."
Then do the toasts.....

I think you can acknowledge it's his 2nd marriage with an opening of "well here we are all again" but then not mention it again.
"I haven't seen half of you since last time X got married... see you all again in 10 years?"Might not be the best line to start with...
"I haven't seen half of you for 10 years.. and I hope never to see you again..."
