Are you sure they don't just sound angry?
I've lived in Scotland since 2004 and love them, down to earth, great sense of humour with no more A holes than anywhere else. However the woman who runs my local cafe can make "Do youse want a latte ?" sound like a threat

It's usually because they are cold and have no money as they've pissed it up the wall. They'll probably have a druggie neighbour to put up with too

My wife is from Berwick and her mother was originally from across the border in Eyemouth and holy crap could the mother in law let rip...

I’d say it’s this, just the accent or tone of voice with it.

I’ve holidayed in Scotland (beautiful country), have friends and work with Scottish people.

They’re great, always found them friendly.
