There's a regular scammer on the car front you may be aware of - generally hacks accounts and puts 100-130 vehicles on at 99p start with the description containing an image of his email (hotmail and different every time) and a buy it now of about 50% of the real value.

As soon as hes rumbled he sets up another account - happened four times yesterday and twice today.

Its obvious its a scam but to a new user it may seem a bargain. Has anyone been done by this? And does anyone know what ebay do about it, do they screen for this or rely on people reporting, and follow up with cyber a crime investigation?

It may be Russian hackers/North Korean agents. It may be 'Mr Scum' in his caravan at Dales Farm. Either way it needs stopping as I'm pissed off with saved searches coming up with this scam every four hours!

Heres a screenshot. No point in a link as it'll be taken down by the time you read this.

Thats not the point though, is it - The fact that it comes up in saved searches is a PITA!

One day, Norris, you will post something positive...

eBay in "Not every item in every search result is exactly what you were looking for" shock. Hold the front page.

Even if you do a category search - say "Porsche" within the "Classic Cars" category, there's a whole bunch of irrelevant results. Sheddy Boxsters, 356 kits, a Roller, various parts.

If this blows your fruit, then I suggest you step away from eBay, because it's been like it for many years, and it's very unlikely to change.

The point also is this isn't a small one-off, its over 450 listings a day by one scammer. In fact today he's on his third hacked account already.

And people do get caught out, someone probably has already which is why hes continuing. Ebay identify ISP's and block them so he's using a different address each time otherwise they would have stopped it.

There was a suspect one on there in Nov/Dec last year. A load of classics came up for sale cheap due to 'bereavement of father' then vanished, then they came up in a different location and vanished again. Each time there was an email address to contact, so I did.
Initially it was:

Hi, Thank you for the interest shown. I am sorry for the late reply. It is still for sale and it's stored inside up north in Inverness, Scotland; In good condition with no rust or dents. All paperwork present in my name. It belonged to my father who unfortunately passed away 3 months ago and it has been in storage since then. I will let it go for £4000 including delivery to your home address. Please see photos attached.

See below some info:

Year: 1971
Mileage: 48,698
Engine Size:

Was restored in the past to a high standard. The paintwork is nice but could do with a polish. The back was repaired at some point and has some filler here and there. It is very solid with all the welding done. The underside of the it is in mint condition with all new suspension parts. All the breaks have been replaced with new cylinders, shoe, pipe drums etc. The interior is very nice with carpets. The seats and door cards have been refurbished at some point. However the driver's side has a slight rip on the seat. The engine bay has been detailed to a beautiful standard with many new nuts, bolts and other items. Fully serviced engine. Also has brand new exhaust system. Brand new wiring looms and pipes as well. The wheels have been powder coated and have brand new tyres fitted. Has new door rubbers and gaskets all round. It has had a lot of time and money spent onit however there is room for improvement. The doors and bonnet need slight alignment as they were taken off for the paint job. Currently not moted as it has been locked up in dry storage for a long time. Two registered owners from new and has done 48698 miles but I do not have the paperwork to back this up. I have the full v5 logbook only.

Let me know if you are still interested

Kind Regards,
Ian

I asked to view it and got:

"Hi there, Sorry for the late reply. I have relocated to Turin, Italy due to work commitments and viewing won't be an option. I think the safest way to complete this purchase is through eBay and PayPal. As for payment we will use PayPal's - Pay After Delivery payment facility which offers the buyer 14 days for it to be delivered/inspected before any funds are released to me. Regarding delivery someone will collect it and will transport it safely to your location. (I will mail the access keys to a reputable transportation company once we've sorted through PayPal).

Please read the PayPal (Pay after delivery) terms by clicking on the link below:

https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/pad-get-pay

If you want to go ahead please confirm your PayPal email to get PAD (pay after delivery) activated.

Kind Regards,
Ian

I left it there....

Unmistakable. There's some giveaways on his listings. The location is always as per the screenshot.

So, seven hacked accounts so far today. Something like 900 listings in total. All taken down within an hour, so what’s he gained?
To lose out a buyer has to email the hotmail, not be put off by the rubbish excuses for his being out of the country, not be put off by the listing going and reappearing under another username, and still be happy to pay via some shady account with the promise of delivery.
So remote a chance of success it seems pointless!!
Maybe he’s some tit with a grudge against Ebay?

There’s another scammer now, with better listings and less obvious. Same thing though - lots of random cars caravans and diggers.
He says he lives in the Isle of Man so it isn’t possible to view. So I’ve told him I ‘have a relative there so it’s not a problem ‘ and waiting for a reply. I’ve asked for his phone number too.
Total waste of time I know but there you go!

I got excited my a cheap mini digger, as soon as you read the description it screams scam.

Shame as he has quite a few nice bits too, but imagine if it was real and this poor bloke was stuck with all these vehicles he can't shift because everyone thinks it's dodgy!

Ignored the request for his phone number and replied with the same email detailing how to pay. It’s got fraud written all over it I really can’t believe anyone’s actually gone through with a ‘purchase’.
Even continually relisting the same items half a dozen times a day with a different host username is a fail to a successful con.
All very odd. Has to be a North Korean Agent and his brilliant idea to fk up the West.

Surely they must have these all lined up pre advertisement timed for a start time usually over a weekend. I'm sure ebay could easily monitor & detect this activity but obviously they don't.

Maybe but I don’t think they can do that as it’s not their account. They seem to get in, list, get found out, get in another etc etc

I’ve usually had this scammer come up on saved searches twice a day with him listing a further 120 cars each time under each hacked account

Over the weekend it increased until on Sunday he did 14 hacked accounts and running sometimes 3 a time as Ebay were trying to delete them. And 280 listings a time.

That’s roughly 3500 fraud attempts in one day!
