Going Back To Childhood Haunts
Discussion
I used to go camping with school every year to Torver, just outside Coniston.
Went back a few years ago to the lakes after what was a 20 year abstinence. To be honest it felt safe and comforting to be back amongst the places that gave me such pleasure in my formative years, and the memories it invoked.

Maybe it's a sign of getting older, I'm now early 40s, but recently I've been back to a place in Scotland that my parents took the family to on many an occasion on holiday when I was young (5-13yrs old) which holds many happy memories.
Also went to see a house and street I grew up in, as I found myself within 20 miles of it for the first time in 30 years.
I'm not a morbid person but being aware of my own mortality has focused me a little more on memories, the good ones that is.

I went to a pub the other night. Popped out to the terrace to have a smoke and realised it was where I told my ex fiance I didn’t want to get married (not childhood granted but feels like a long time ago).
Was a very odd experience and I replayed the whole conversation through my head again.
Was horrendous

Very nice thought, I should go back to retrace those stepsWent back a few years ago to the lakes after what was a 20 year abstinence. To be honest it felt safe and comforting to be back amongst the places that gave me such pleasure in my formative years, and the memories it invoked.

Walking my parents dog for them in my childhood area a few weeks back
Thought I'd cut through the woods from one lake to another, got there no paths, just overgrown bushes and woods
Probably had the best time of my life playing in there when I was a kid
Different times
Better that than it having become full of houses like one of my old childhood playgrounds...I remember when it were all fields etc...Thought I'd cut through the woods from one lake to another, got there no paths, just overgrown bushes and woods

Fitting topic for me.
From late Thursday night I have had the worst 24 hours of my life. More than when my dad died when I was 19 and he was and still is my hero (I’m a few months off 40).
On the Saturday I drove from Lancaster to where I grew up... Govan. I went to my old street to see the house i grew up in. I went to my primary school. I went to the supermarket we went to for the family shopping that has its car park on the roof. I parked up and went across the road to where my dad used to take me for ice cream and I had what I always had while Mum was shopping... square (lorne) sausage bun followed by two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
I had a quiet moment to myself. I gathered myself together. I drove back down, past Lancaster to Manchester airport terminal one to pick my mum up from her holiday. I gave her the biggest hug I’ve ever given her... drove back to Lancaster and dropped her off.
Nobody knows I did that.
It helped an awful lot.
As did posting this... o and so has putting a deposit on a C63 Estate that I’m picking up on Friday.

Sounds like time for a logon name change as well.
I do from time to time.
I drive round my old paper round route every now and again if i'm up that way visiting family.
I also go to the local park I had at the top of my street as a kid for bonfire night (they have a council firework display on).
Many of my old haunts (one rather ironically called "the haunty") no longer exist though - having been filled in or built on years ago.

When I were a lad my parents used to take my sister and I to Swanage in Dorset on holiday. In the early years we had a Morris 8, which would be loaded up with everything including the tv, and when times improved a (new) VW Beetle. The journey was around 60 miles, and seemed to take forever, but it was part of the holiday.
Nowadays I live about ten miles closer, and often get up early and reach Swanage in time for a full English breakfast. I'll then visit a few old haunts and head home in the evening. The world seems to have become smaller.
