My wife showed me this photo on Facebook, she asked me if I knew why it was wrong, I said because the bloke is on the inside and the lady is nearer the road, thus exposed to more danger.

She seemed happy with my answer and I should have left it, but why should the man be exposed to more danger by default,if a car mounts the pavement and clips him he is no better able to take a hit from a moving vehicle because he is slightly taller and a percentage stronger. She didnt like it when I questioned it.

I would indeed walk on the right or suggest single file if I thought it was that dangerous, but with all the stuff about equality and the like, which I fully support but why is it assumed we, by default should take more risk and if we question it we get called out on it ?

Chivalry is mostly symbolic and gesture-based.
No one is asking you to dive in front of a bus.

The woman should walk on the outside, nearest the road, as the Man will probably be the Breadwinner in the familly and will probably command a higher salary.... therefore the wife/partner is more dispensable.

I always thought the male should walk nearer the road to protect thy damsel in some dress from being splashed by a ner-do-well in a horseless carriage entering a puddle on the tarmacaddam?

But, as well, how dare you just assume their genders like that. It's 2018 mate brah

That's not actually the reason for it being the "correct" chivalrous way to walk.

Back in the middle ages, before inside plumbing, people used to empty their night-soil pots* out of the window. The person nearer the building was less likely to be hit, because of the trajectory.

* - yes, this is what you think it is.

This is... less relevant today.

B'sides, in the massively unlikely situation where a car comes tonking down the pavement, neither side is safer.

Perhaps a better question is why she's hanging around football pages on FB.

I always though a gentleman walked on the left of a lady so that he could draw his sword to protect her from footpads.

A bloke should walk closest the road.

If we're walking through a town we're forever swapping sides as if we cross the road, we also have to swap hands.

I mean, I thought this was the reason, but surely he walks on the right, so his sword hand is free?
How do we know the guy in the pic isn't left-handed? Hmm?

I mean, back in the day, a cack-hander would have been drowned at birth for witchcraft, so it was less of an issue back then, but...

I always walk on the outside, what’s the procedure in a same sex relationship? Do they take turns at going on the outside?

She showed it me and I saw it again on a football page, I am not into football but some folk I know are afflicted with fascination for the game.

2Cv's is correct. In Tudor times, house owners were charged dependant upon the footprint of their house. So the footprint was kept to a minimum but the upper storeys were cantilevered out over the carriageway or walkway below. If a lady walked on the inside of the gentleman she was effectively under the upper storeys and protected from the buckets of poo and pee that were thrown out of the upstairs windows.
