It seems to me, that people turning their backs on their jobs in order to become a life coach or mentor is becoming quite prevalent.

An acquaintance of mine and his Wife recently did this. Both had good jobs, both professionally qualified in their fields. They started to spend time and money with a couple overseas who allowed them to “be free of stress” and “follow their desires” and so on.

They now do lots of inspirational videos on Facebook sharing how wonderful life is. They still have mentors and run courses allowing you to “free yourself.” They keep banging on about how you should desire certain things. To me, it’s all a load of waffle.

Is it just me, or is this just a load of bks? Everyone seems to be a life coach, it’s almost like a cult and a following. There seems to be an underlying current of material wealth being wanted even though the messages they deliver are always about “emotional wealth”

Thoughts welcome.

If someone can make a living out of telling people too thick to figure it out themselves what they should do then fair play to them. I wish I could do it, I’m obviously too stupid

My missus started looking in to this and basically worked out very quickly that you can only make money in this field by teaching other people how to become a life coach. To my mind that makes it a pyramid scheme.
I think the number of people who want a life coach and would be willing to pay for one would not outweigh the number of people who fancy being a lifecoach.

MLM with cult like recruiting techniques, c.f. love bombing.

Look out for flat earth posts, it is surprising how many of the people pushing that nonsense are 'life coaches'. It is a gullibility filter, in the same way 419 scam emails deliberately use poor spelling

It's a thing. Every other divorced woman in suburban London is now a life coach. Apparently giving talks to half a dozen menopausal chubsters in a room above a gastropub about loving yourself, and empowerment and following your passion makes them entrepreneurs. Throw in some instagram motivational platitudes and a picture of Gandhi, and Bob's your uncle. Seems harmless enough.

Yeah remarkably everyone has a wonderful life on virtual Farcebook.

Anyone falling for this bks for thickos pedalling the dream life deserves to be duped both financially and emotionally. There will always be an infinite number of impressionable retards chasing the latest crap. No different to those ready to be rinsed of their hard earned via Forex trading scams. hehe What could possibly go wrong lol.

Meantime, back in the real world.

It is indeed a bit cultish, particularly insofar as those peddling the stuff either genuinely believe it or genuinely want to believe it. Most aren't in it cynically. Some seem to have monstrous egos, others seem rather fragile and really have been deeply unhappy in the past. The advice that gets churned out seems rather simplistic, and I can't help but think that the people who really latch onto this stuff have bigger problems and they'd benefit from more professional help.

It's like a more trivial version of counselling and people often seem to get into it the same way. I know a few people who became trained counsellors as a form of self-help. Obviously you need to get to know yourself very well if you're then going be able to counsel other people objectively as you need to be able to take yourself out of the equation, or at least understand your own reactions. But when your training is also a way of getting therapy, it rings alarm bells. Having said that, it seems to have worked well for the people I know and their clients.

Ho hum. Each to their own. I only fear that someone who clings on to the mantras learned from their life coach may be setting themselves up for a big fall when things don't pan out, and instead of recognising that they have patterns of thinking and behaviour that they need help to change, instead they'll see themselves as weak-willed because they've failed to attain a set of unrealistic goals and some lifestyle ambition.

Who cares?

Being critical of people who are looking for a little direction in their life seems a bit kuntish. It doesn't affect your wallet so hope back into your rocking chair you miserable old toads, before I come round in my MX-5 and hammer some frozen Richmond's into your lawns.

I tend to think of this kind of thing as just one type of mental breakdown.

Sums it up very well, those with a few quid looking for enlightenment have many avenues in which to ‘splash thier cash’.

I've not witnessed life coaching as you lot have described. It can be useful for people who need some kind of motivation to sort their st out eg if you're stuck in a job you hate and need help figuring out how to make your life more pleasant.

There are loads of business coaches out there selling courses and workshops which reminds me of all those trading academies teaching people to trade their life savings away...

Before you ask, I'm not a life coach.

In for a penny. An awful lot of business coaching seems to be arse gravy. The life coaches I've encountered seem to either be personal trainers moving "up" or would -be business coaches trading "down". As with all these things, I'm sure amongst the incompetents and the delusional there are some people who are excellent and can help their clients.

Now for all us naive petrolheads a course in "Lifemanship" would be worth paying for......

What is Lifemanship? "Lifemanship is the science of being one up on your opponents at all times. It is the art of making him feel that somewhere, somehow he has become less than you, less desirable, less worthy, less blessed.
Who then you ask are your opponents? Everybody in a word who is not you, and the purpose of your life must be to be one up on them, because, and mark this well, he who is not one up, is one down." Mr S Potter
