How do you protect yourself?
Discussion
Ok, picture the scene...
You live in a house with your family and you have your bmw m3 on the drive that you pay for and a Rolex on your wrist from years of hard work....
If someone comes to take your car the police wouldn’t get there for 20 mins at least and, even if they did, there would be 4 attackers that could probably beat up the police with their weapons or scarper on the back of a moped and not get caught by a police car. Even if they got caught they would just play on a PlayStation for a month in prison before doing it again.
You have no idea when someone breaks in what they’re going to do? Are they going to tie you up or throw acid in your face and your child and wife’s face, will they shoot you because they’re high on drugs or just aggressive?
The police are sadly now incapable of protecting the public but if they cannot protect you, your family and your possessions then what can you do?
Even pepper spray is illegal, guns of course are illegal but if 3 blokes armed with little more than a hammer, a knife and a wrench broke into your home now what could you honestly do?
Aren’t we all just sitting ducks and have no way of defending ourselves?
No wonder these moped gangs don’t mind being filmed and just walk about without issue or care in the world
Genuinely, how do you defend yourself?

I don't worry about it. Life's too short
The chances of it happening are beyond miniscule, but if it did happen they can have whatever they want. That's what insurance is for.
I think sadly the chances are more than minuscule aren’t they? The chances of it happening are beyond miniscule, but if it did happen they can have whatever they want. That's what insurance is for.
Also if you think about it insurance against theft is effectively a tax for us to pay for the polices inability to cope. You don’t need theft insurance for things and we wouldn’t need it if there was little theft
Also this link is interesting. They’ve come for the bike 3 times in broad daylight and they just don’t care. The owner of the bike simply cannot do anything and is utterly helpless. I don’t know if I could just sit and watch people take my things away - I hope I could but I just don’t think I could sit and do nothing

Defend myself?...... f
k that, thy can have anything I own.
If they came in to hurt me or my family, I'd defend myself with anything that came to hand. Though I don't have anything specifically for it (baseball bat, hammer etc.)
That’s the point isn’t it - few people have anything specific to defend themselves with and even if you did have a hammer or something as long as there is 2 of them and 1 of you you would probably still be over powered.

We aren’t allowed anything to defend ourselves with, even pepper spray, so we are effectively a defenceless nation
Good door locks, alarm system, move keys upstairs at night, lights on a timer.
Take good risk management precautions with a back stop of an insurance policy. Check that it covers your watch and other items when they are taken out of the house. Have a valuation done on any jewellery and watches over £2000 and specify them on the policy.
Be prepared to give up a car and a watch to someone who can do you harm. Insurance can replace goods, it cannot fix damage to you.

There have been a few break ins not too far from where I live - every house that had a dog was fine as the intruders fled.
I have a Great Dane..and the bark is impressive.
Also a burglar alarm where you can see the red light on each external doorway that indicates the alarm is armed.
Not generally worried about this stuff.

It does seem the standard answer is ‘buy an insurance policy that covers theft and accept if someone turns up to take your things then give it to them’
I too probably fall into this category but isn’t this a little sad?
We have fallen into a nation now where mainstream thinking is to give your items away rather than defend yourself and where we are accepting of our fate. We just accept it happens and that there is little we can do if someone just decides to smash our windows and enter your home
In a way this is what causes crime to flourish
Personally I think the problem is at the government and police level and that penalties for theft should be very severe and that home owners should be given greater powers to defend themselves if someone breaks into their home

I have a straightforward answer for this. I have a house alarm and a 4kg powder extinguisher in my bedroom. If the house gets broken into the alarm goes off. If they start coming upstairs they get the works with blast of the powder extinguisher. https://youtu.be/uAaalWAUOZI?t=45s
If they keep coming they get the whole f
king thing thrown at them.

The only way you could possibly do anything is to let them bugger off and then Chase them down and run them off the road, preferably into something hard and pointy. We aren’t allowed anything to defend ourselves with, even pepper spray, so we are effectively a defenceless nation
But of course you would be in more trouble than them.
We truly are toothless and they know it.

How would you see that situation ending if three blokes broke in to you home out of interest?
Do you have the balls to commit murder?
I thought the thinking had swung to be in favour of the one defending their home? Can’t remember the article but I saw it posted here. Do you have the balls to commit murder?
As a certificate holder it’s not really an option anyway because you have to faff around unlocking the cabinet.
I like the fire extinguisher idea though.
