Men's monochrome v womens' colourful office wear
Discussion
Why is men's office wear so monochrome? Bar maybe a blue or brown here and there (or lovely tweed), it's naught but a sea of black and various shades of grey (Eighties all the way through to graphite). Rather bloody boring.

Jacket linings, shirts, ties or cufflinks (maybe socks) seem to be the only splashes of colour.
Whereas women wear colourful items like this:

Is there an unwritten rule concerning this?

Totally agree. And I was particularly struck by it the other day, as I was wandering round near one of my big client's offices and it was this:

But I had been to the theatre the previous night to see a restoration play which was full of:

and I felt that the city streets would be much improved with a bit of bright green embroidered silk. Swap out the breeches for a pair of modern trousers and the outfit is no more complex than a suit.
Go back to your wardrobes and prepare for foppery.

Could it be something like monochrome being seen as serious which is linked to authority/power. Wheras colour is seen as creative, whimsical and non-conformist?
Similar to how cars are now a bunch of Premium Greys and few are designed to be "pretty" so much as bold- even the Micra looks aggressive these days.
And a bright red Civic Type R which would have fit right in with the whale tails of yesteryear and been complimented on it's outrageousness now looks a bit immature to "society" compared to a german diesel.

I'd say the jackets of the chaps in the middle and on the right are a little long and the guy in the middle bought his trousers unfinished and didn't bother to get them sorted. As for the chap on the left, stand up straight man!!!!! My work trousers have built in knee pads with a single break where they touch my rigger boots, so you must understand I am some sort of sartorial guru

t and one decently cut suit.
All the talking heads you see on TV are middle aged men in dark suits with deep voices. All the politicians too; it's a cultivated image.
