There are very good reasons for doing this now. The looming threat of big data hacks is the main one I guess. Piece together enough information with enough computing power and the possibilities are endless. Without adopting a cryptographic banking system it is conceivable that every bank account in the UK could be hacked and cleared out overnight.

F**k doomsday - I'm just happy that 90% of the non stop marketing "last chance sale" "See our new range" etc etc emails will stop.jingars said:

Although the North Pole is not in Europe so is he actually liable for it? or do you subscribe to the notion that he lives in Lapland?"He's making a list,

Lots of firms are claiming legitmate interest, which they argue means they can continue sending you stuff.
It all depends whether the regulator punishes wrongdoers - very unlikely in my opinion.
Is there a "plain English" interpretation of this Legitimate Interest workaround anywhere? It all depends whether the regulator punishes wrongdoers - very unlikely in my opinion.
I've googled and read what the ICO have to say on it, and their pages on it are woollier than ever.
For me the most eye opening thing about it all, is how disorganised so many companies seem to be? They've had two years to get their stuff together on this, so why are so many emailing me today about it, the day before it goes live? Big black mark for lots of companies.

Technically no, All those letters that were sent to Santa were a defined act of communication and not an accident. So could be treated as an "opt-in"."He's making a list,

So long as Santa goes to adequate lengths to protect your data, and removes it if you ask to be "forgotten", he's golden. Or red.... whatever.
Just had an interesting exchange with Marks and Spencers on release of personal data including what I buy using this Sparks card. They say that they can pass on anything they want as long as it to a Trusted Partner and that this is allowed in the Terms and Conditions, there is also no opt out from the customers point of view.
Good Luck with that M and S, making money are ya?

There are a lot of get-outs for companies, particularly if you are willingly using their services (such as with a loyalty card) - they can pretty much do what they want with your data as you've allowed them to by signing up to the service. You can of course demand to be forgotten under GDPR but then your loyalty card stops working and you lose all your points.

I suspect the ICO is massively under-resourced to fully police GDPR, given the new breach reporting regime. It all depends whether the regulator punishes wrongdoers - very unlikely in my opinion.
