If you had been born 100 years earlier.....
Discussion
My job (watch/clock/chronometer maker) still existed 100 years ago and was more important in a pre-electronic age. I sometimes think it would be nice to compete with the best of the era.
In reality, it probably wouldn't have mattered though, as I'd have been born into poverty and either died in a mine or on a fishing boat assuming I manage to avoid being killed in a WWI massacre.

^^ pretty much the same for me.
My current career necessitated me attending university but given my social background - i'd have probably ended up on the docks or in the local ship yard (i'm pretty handy DIY etc) - this is of course assuming I wasn't killed in WW1 - I have no ailments that would have excluded me from a draft.

Assuming age we are now, and it's now 1918...?
Considering the demographic/average age of pistonheads, I suspect this will be a very morbid and sobering thread; in 1918 people rarely lived past 60 (natural lifespan) - iirc average lifespan in 1918 was early 30's though due to WWI and Spanish flu.
That aside, I'd probably be a surgeon, teaching in a medical school or studying anaesthesiology. Certainly something sciencey AND gruesome.
However, considering a medical misdiagnosis almost cost me my life a few years back, I'd be dead.
200 years ago, probably similar. Ships surgeon, hacking off legs. Same for 300 years ago. 400 years ago I'd have been burned at the stake....

That's essentially 100 years ago today, or am I being thick?
In the tail end of WW1...not many career opportunities then!
1918 was a bit of a special case, which is why I didn't 'what would you be doing in 1918 if you were then the same age you are now?'. Perhaps I should have said 'roughly the same age but with a bit of wriggle room so everyone doesn't say 'sitting in a French trench'.That's essentially 100 years ago today, or am I being thick?

It says "born 100 years earlier". So for me it would be mid 1870s.That's essentially 100 years ago today, or am I being thick?

I'd be early 40s when WW1 broke out.

Until very recently I was still working in an infrastructure that was originally put in place over 100 years ago, and still working on the same basic principles from back then.
Personally I have now moved on and whilst I am still doing the same job, it's with equipment that is slightly more 21st century than 19th century. However, the 19th century stuff is still out there and still being used in areas that are still waiting to be updated.
