We've been flirting with the idea of moving out of London for a while - possibly to Bishops Stortford, Brentwood or Saffron Walden. We're curently on the London / Essex border.
We have one son in primary and one son in secondary (Year 7) Otherwise known as the first year in my day smile

Has anyone had any real world experience of moving kids out of school mid term and what it's like trying to secure a space elsewhere? Most of the areas names above have exceptional schools so i can imagine it's going to be quite tough.

I can't help re the schools aspect but do know Stortford and Saffron Walden well so might be able to help with the areas etc. Two very distinct and in my opinion different towns.

Cheers

What are your thoughts? on both. I know Stortie relatively well as my brother lives in Sawbridgeworth. Always had a pretty good rep, and has most of what i need (including quick trains into Liv Street). Schools seem good, for the most part. Obviously you can't beat on-the-ground experience so would welcome any advice.

If your brother lives in Sawbridgeworth then he'll obviously be able to advise you re Stortford. The town has changed significantly over the past 20/30 years and with extensive building at the moment is changing again, this may or may not bother you either way. I would argue services and the town centre hasn't kept pace.

Saffron Walden is smaller and has a pleasant atmosphere, I believe the High School has a super reputation with inevitable issues getting in, but it might be easier mid term as a result of families moving etc. House prices in the town reflect this and despite being further out than Stortford may well be higher like for like. The station is out of the town so it almost impossible to walk to, whereas Stortford is obviously right in the town.

From my experience north Essex is very different from the South of the county, I think quality of life is better, but again this is entirely personal.

True, but the south (Southend District) has a selection of exceptional Grammar schools.
