Okey I don't know where this topic should go so I'll plonk it here.

I like France. I go there regularly. My almost non-existent French is annoying to myself.

What's a good way to learn, preferably free, online and with audio?

I have 'le parisienne' on my facebook feed which gives bite size news items with videos and soundtrack which i follow to improve my spoken french.

I can tell you all about le coupe de monde and Bastille day just lately.

13% in my gce mocks meant I wasn't good enough to sit the main exam but 55 years later, a regular visitor over the channel and my son marrying a french lady has encouraged me to join the local conversation group for an hour every fortnight and I think I'm good enough to get by if not grammatically correct.

After me...' voulez coucher avec moi, ce soir...'

Done that a couple of times.
I’d rather have my testacles skinned than go there again.

Multiple ways... lessons + immersion.

Lessons advice is good

Look for local groups wanting to learn French (facebook is handy for this) and just talk

Read French web sites (scan them at first - pick a topic you know like F1, football, politics and scan read the articles - you may be surprised how much you can follow.

Add podcasts.

Listen to French radio - especially news

Oh, and focus on expression of your idea rather than being grammatically correct - French people are very forgiving if you get the idea across but mess up the verb/gender.

Another vote for this - only just started but its a good grounding thus far - hopefully more conversational elements will be introduced as I progress.

^ This in spades
The fact that in the first 10 minutes - he explained that you already know 1500 words in French just by these rules......

The Channel 4 documentary he did years ago with failed kids..... no homework etc and get them O level Oral French IIRC within a few weeks- was extraordinary.

And on the first CD - You learn sufficient to book a table for a meal at a restaurant.

I can't speak French, so I let my funky music do the talking.

Michael Thomas to get you started on the basics. Pimsleur (expensive though) if you want to get a bit more depth.

I used it to learn Spanish, I managed to learn enough to get by for a couple of weeks.

Top tip, listen to foreign commercial radio. You kinda know what they're going to be saying in the adverts so the language sorta seeps in subconsciously.
