Pistonheads among other places/people has always had an obsession about 'old money'.

New money is frowned upon, like they are some kind of idiot.

And then it occurred to me. Lots of these 'old money' people are useless, they are born into wealth, wealth thats not even their parents wealth, they dont actually have any money, they just have the previous family hand me downs. They may not have ever even had a job. I have seen a few programs over the years showing their family wealth but can't afford to dress themselves properly.

New money? I am much more impressed with someone who has come from nothing, worked their arses off their whole life and now have succeeded. Yes sure some of the stuff some of this new money buys is a bit flashy, granted.

I would rather work my whole life and achieve something off my own back than sit in some dark damp old house somewhere waiting for people to die so i can inherit it all so i could continue sitting in the same old st heap.

That said id happily take any donation if it was coming hehe

I've got some old money but I think the banks will still change the occasional ten pound note.

I’ve not noticed that. There are a few who think the etiquette they were taught by their governess is the only acceptable set, I suppose, but I think most people here have more respect for people who’ve started with little and worked for what they have.

Pistonheads is full of wannabes who are neither new nor old money yet have strong views on both and think they can impress with claims of knowing someone who knows someone who is extremely wealthy.

The mistake you're making is taking them remotely seriously! biggrin

Its more a case of comments along the lines of 'oh yea he drives a 200 year old defender with no seats, wears a jumper with one sleeve, has egg in his beard and still has dial up internet, but.......if you know you know, nudge nudge wink wink, he's worth eleventy million and his family originally created the easter egg back in 1862.'

You raised the topic... you post examples, or have your butler do it?

I wont be spending the next how ever long searching for examples. If you use piston heads a lot, which i assume with a large post count you do then you know full well theres regular comments about 'old money' 'defenders' 'wealth whispers' etc etc.

My butler is currently making me some clotted cream scones with cream made from virgin dairy cows so he's a bit busy at the minute smile

It's not because it taps straight into the main vein of the obsession of the wannabes that seem to pervade Pistonheads these days. Money and status.

If they start driving around their dads 50 year old s class with crystal headlining and dents in every panel while wearing their grand dads old armani jacket then yes.

I clearly frequent the wrong forums.

If you present an argument it is normal to present evidence, or so my on-call barrister advised me.

Yes, for example, on PH anyone who needs to finance a car is a stupid peasant, even if financing it is cheaper than buying it cash and losing the depreciation.

There's an obsession with 'old money' people driving stbox old Volvos.

Anyone who has ever had good luck and become wealthy through it is a peasant. Anyone who did well through their own hard work and became wealthy is a lucky manipulative peasant. Anyone who doesn't like tatty 35 year old brown Mercedes is clearly not old money and therefore a tasteless peasant.

Of course, the ones shouting 'peasant' are in fact typing from a small box room in their 1950s bought-cheap council houses on an awful estate somewhere in Englandshire and are, of course, therefore fking peasants.

I, on the other hand, are old money. Toodle-loo.

You can't beat old money....what could be simpler?

960 farthings in a pound

240 pennies in a pound.

8 half crowns in a pound

4 crowns in a pound

10 florins in a pound

20 shillings in a pound

80 threepenny bits in a pound

A guinea was one pound and one shilling.

A Beatles LP record was 32s/6d

A single 6s/4d

None of this complicated decimal rubbish.

I used to get half a crown pocket money when I was a kid......lasted me all week,

biggrin
