Ebay 2nd chance offer - can i expect to..
Discussion
Ive received a 2nd chance offer on an item after the winning bidder backed out of the deal (he wanted the item posting abroad even though the listing was collection only)
Do I have a case to argue that I should get the item for the price that it would have sold for had the winning bidder not messed the auction up ?
Fair enough Iam being offered the item at my maximum bid price that I was willing to pay,and the difference is only a few quid, but its the principle iam getting at here,ie should I have to pay more than I should have done because of someone elses carelessness?

As above. Classic eBay scam. Tell the seller to jog on.
I closed my eBay account a while back, partly because of this kind of thing.
I had two failed sales in a row the other day. Both from bots that disappeared. I second chanced both and they were turned down. I put them on for the buy it now price around the 'winning' bids and they went within the day. I closed my eBay account a while back, partly because of this kind of thing.
A proper item is a bit different than a piece of toast that looks like Sooty or something.

If you're still interested you should eliminate all bids by the winner & only pay one bid increment above the highest bid by any other bidder. You shouldn't pay your maximum. If the seller doesn't agree then just move on & look elsewhere.Do I have a case to argue that I should get the item for the price that it would have sold for had the winning bidder not messed the auction up ?

So you put in a maximum bid that you were happy to pay to get said item, but now because the winner pulled out, you want it cheaper?
Exactly what I was going to write. These second chance offers can be dubious, but I've issued them countless times when numpty buyers back out.
As said, accept it or wait for the relist (assuming there wasn't another under bidder)

As said in my original post iam prepared to pay the maximum price that I bid,but since the winning bid was not technically valid (meaning it was never going receive the item anyways) its just a matter of principal that I should get the item at the price that it would have sold for had the winning bidder not been in the equation. You would probably feel the same.if you were in my position.
I think its common on ebay for non uk bidders to bid on an item located in the uk that is collection only without them realising it.
I don't really feel the seller is trying to pull a scam,if so he stood to gain very little moneywise,
the item was relatively low value, theres no shortage of the item on ebay at any given moment,
it sold for quite a bit less than the average price of the item,no doubt partly due to it being collection only
Is this being done via Messages, rather than an actual Second Chance Offer?
From https://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/second_chance_o...
"
How it works
When you send a Second Chance Offer, the bidders you've sent the offer to will receive a message asking if they'd like to buy the item at a Buy it now price equal to their last bid amount. It's up to the buyer to decide whether to accept the offer.
For example, if the bidder's last shown bid was £75.31, your offer will contain a Buy it now price of £75.31.
"
So you shouldn't be asked to pay more than your last bid. If that's also what your maximum bid was, and you're now not happy to pay that, turn them down and wait for it to be relisted.
And next time, only bid what you want to pay...

No, he wants it at the price he would have paid had the other person not bid. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.shtu - yes it was an actual second chance offer with a buy it now price equal to my maximum bid.
Also,as far as refusing the second chance offer and waiting until the item is relisted is concerned,i get your point but theres probably just as much chance I would be outbidded again as in the original auction.
