It was Mrs SLRs birthday and we went out for a meal with her sister and S/O.
We invited them.

As it was her birthday I thought it would be the decent thing if I paid the bill, £300 ish.
Our money is joint as we have a joint income but I took it as "my" treat to take her and 2 others out.

Mrs SLR says I was wrong to do this without asking her first.
Arguments have ensued, pans thrown, locks changed etc etc.... now she says "ask your stupid internet friends".... yeah.... so..

(she called you all stupid..)

Easy...

Stop paying into the joint account and separate out your money and her money.

(only works if you are major breadwinner here)

Then let her whine about not having any money to spend again.

To be fair to Mrs SLR she's ended up paying for 50% of her own "treat" - Doesn't sound like much of a treat....

Well how do you do it if it all is 50:50 on the business, you only have a joint account and then she shines that you have paid for her sister and S/O... Its just weird that she would complain and I would state that its find, just deduct it from my half of the bank account and tell her to do one.

It's her birthday, she got a year older.

She'll be sensitive about everything other than her age. wink

This is why you need joint money, your money and her money so she has no gripes like this and likewise you can’t moan at her for spending hundreds of pounds on a handbag out of her money. Mrs Bored Stupid and I have never once argued about money I buy bikes and watch football she goes on rediculous expensive spa breaks.

Ask her, are you grumpy cos you're on your period?

Works everytime, calms them straight down. Trust me.

That last bit had me in stitches.

Mrs geeks and I get paid into the same Joint Account where all the bills are paid, we then split what is left own the middle and pay it out to our own accounts, thus if I wish to treat her it goes on my card not the JA nor hers, our "floats" are ours to do with as we wish, I race cars, she dotes on the dogs!

With all that said, she called me stupid, so fk her frankly she should just be grateful you let her out the kitchen and dinner prepared for her not by her etc etc! hehe

Has she really changed the locks - or was that you? Because I'd have sympathy if it was you who made sure that a loony didn't have access to your home.

Tell her you should trust each other. Sometimes she'll spend on things you don't agree with and vice versa but that you'll always back each other when one makes a judgement call. Helps if you are both generally as cautious as each other. Works with my wife. Don't have a joint account but never question what each other spends - if it's a lot the other figures it must be important, bargain or just meant a lot to them at that moment. Used to have a joint account but budgeting was much tougher.

Didn't like that gesture for her birthday?

Perhaps for Christmas invite SIL and BIL for dinner again, but this time deliver divorce papers A la Den Watts

I kind of get where she is coming from but surely she must realise that this arrangement (i.e, one bank account, etc) is always going to have these issues.

Whenever either of you want to buy something for yourself do you have to ask for permission from the other? What happens at Christmas? Do you spend exactly the same on each other?

Personally, we have a joint account which we pay enough into to cover all monthly bills and any else stays in our accounts to do as we want with. Works for us.

Wait... she called us something?

Erm, my experience is that when your Wife/GF says that you're wrong, accept that you're wrong even if it violates a law of thermodynamics.
