Inspired by a discussion in another thread, what house rules does everyone have when playing Monopoly? Our main ones are fines go into the centre of the board and when landing on free parking you get the money, also when passing go the £200 isn't paid until after you have passed the income tax square.

We had a family referendum on whether Mayfair should be allowed to leave the rest of the board and operate by itself, imposing its own taxes, negotiating with other streets and hotel chains and limit how many players can land on it in one game.

A little over half the family voted for Mayfair to have its own rules, now the family has split completely and argue about it to the exclusion of everything else biggrin

People probably don't notice because it's not all that different from their everyday experiences with their own bank hehe

Yeh - we play that one.

We also play that throwing a double get's you out of Jail and you don't get a second throw.

Where it differs from the official rule however is that instead of moving forward that many places immediately - you simple move to "just visiting".

We also play the rule that fine money goes in the middle. Throwing a double allows you to skip paying rent on others properties and no tent can be collected when you’re in jail.

Why would you need a tent in jail anyway? Cells have a roof!

Land on go £400, land on Free Parking get the centre pot from fines and taxes.

No rent when in jail was always an argument.

Double rent on any property that you land on if you are living under the same roof as the property owner.

You are let off the rent on a purple or green with a hotel if you can say the names of every street in order whilst turned away from the board.

We also play that throwing a double in jail gets you out but just move to visiting until your next go

Play this quite a lot with all our family, grandparents etc. Play some rules like above and occasionally have tried others

- fines go into pile and given to whoever hits free parking
- can build even if you don't own a whole set but houses cost double
- can't build at all until first player passes Go
- remove an item of clothing everytime you hit community chest or chance.

Luckily IME older people tend to wear many layers of clothing!

Yep - also play that one.

Another I have just remembered is that you can't buy anything until you have been around the board and passed go at least once.

Surely the most common house rule is no auctions of property if you choose not to buy on your go?

Many moons ago I shared a house with 2 other Surveyors. We ended up with what became a very competitive game of monopoly.

Many bankruptcies were saved by strategic Partnerships, and a few moments caused by foreclosing on secured loans after individuals offered better terms than the bank...
