I’ve had a text message today from the number of an acquaintance of about 2 years ago: “yo! Got any bud?”

I said “no, Steve, not my line of work.”

“Who is Steve? I am Greg. Who are you?”

“Not who you think”

Obviously a case of mistaken identity , but it happens a lot. So what is the story? People contacting me wanting to buy drugs and claiming to be someone other than the person whose name is stored against the number in my phone. Do people pass their old SIM cards on to others, or are they PAYG numbers that are being recycled?

Similar story...

Sitting in my car outside McDonald's, waiting for mate who was getting food..

Random guy jumps in passenger seat, "orrite mate, **Sniffle** how many did you want.."

Um, unless you are referring to sausage and egg McMuffins, NONE thank you!

get out and take your drippy nose with you!

Assuming you mean reissued then yes. Often within hours. My son was transferring his number to Virgin Mobile. The customer services person typed it in wrong so he ended up with a random number. Within hours of the transfer completing his number had been reissued to someone else. They didn't want it as they were getting lots of, to them, random texts and calls. It took a week to get it back and only got resolved following an email to the CEO.

Someone approached me in a club a few years back asking if I had any coke. I don't deal drugs. My mate, ever enterprising said that we should ask how much they want and take their cash for such insolence in their approach. Told them it was £60 a go and they wanted 2, took the money and jumped in a cab, that was a time where we hoped the uber was where it appeared on the app...

Presumably the number was recycled. I got an EE sim that was instantly bombarded with texts and telephony from numerous numbers. I binned it.

I got asked if I had any to sell in a club in Estonia once - maybe I stuck out too much who knows? In another instance on the same trip some guy who sells those rides on those pedal cycle things was trying to sell me some as he knew "people"..

Once after I night out I had some woman constantly ring me for hours asking if I had any "stuff" - it turned out after i gave someone I knew my number in a club for a completely unrelated matter this person then mistakenly passed this number on to this woman. A harshly worded text message soon stopped this smile

When I was younger 18 to early 20’s I had a shaved head and was really into weight training at the time so was quite big along with being 6,2. I could not have a night out in a bar/club etc without getting asked at least once by randoms during the night if I had any drugs they could buy. Had quite a few times where I was followed to the toilets and asked if I had anything which can be quite unnerving.
Also sat waiting for a friend once in a bad area and this guy just yanks my passenger door open and dives in looks at me while I say “WTF” you doing? Realised he was in the wrong car and jumps out. Few minutes later an obvious dealer turns up in his brand new ST further down which the same guy then jumps in and they speed off down the road lol

Someone once phoned my house insisting they left a message for Charlie. I had to several times explain my name wasn’t Charlie but they sounded fairly desperate.

I was far too innocent to realise what was going on til a few days later.

To be fair if this was anywhere from 88 until the dark web was invented everyone got asked for drugs in clubs.

One weekend in Amsterdam during the early 90's a group of us gentlemen went on a cultural tour of the area.

Mark, bless him was quite naive and when a guy came up to him saying "Charlie, Charlie?" he offered his hand and said "I'm Mark, and it's nice to meet you"...
