Night out in Manchester
Discussion
The wife and I are going for a night out in Manc and need some advice. We are in our late forties but like a bit of fun, great music, food and booze.
Question is where to stay and where to go? I know the place a bit but want to make the most of what this great city has to offer. Recommendations welcome.

The Makie Mayor is a good place to start and have an informal bite to eat. Not far from there on Oldham Street is a bar called Behind Closed Doors which is worth a visit. Pen and Pencil, The Whisky Jar are also with a visit.
We like The Refuge as it’s a great place to watch the world go by with some good music, it’s the foyer bar and restaurant for the Principle hotel.
Dukes 92 is also good in the afternoon

Was there the other day during manc pride, awesome venue, the setting is so grand, loved the high ceilings etc. I honestly can't think of anything like it where I live. For what it's worth, it was packed out on the Sunday but obviously that's a busy bank holiday weekend so don't know what it's normally like, just remember the setting being excellent.037 said:

Depends what you want.
Laid back and causal? Northern Quarter for food and drink. Luck Lust Liqour and Burn do some pretty ace Burritos and Tacos, although if you’re having a heavy session then it is very filling. Plenty of good bars and pubs around there, lots of live music too if that’s your thing. A more “indie” sort of place.
Slightly more upmarket? Spinningfields. Lots of cocktail bars. Fazenda is pretty good for food (if you like meat) but there’s lots on offer. More “trendy”.
Avoid Canal Street, Deansgate locks and The Printworks, unless you’re trying to replicate any night out in any town.

When are you going and what is your budget?
Sat 8th Sept. Going to see James & Charlatans (again) in the Arena so aim to get there for around 4pm. Few drinks and something to eat before and then somewhere to go on to from there after. However, looking to get to know it better as this may not be a one off. Thanks for the help.

If it were me then I would probably have a couple in Spinningfields, if you are starting early at 4pm maybe try and get up into 20 Stories.
If there is a queue (usually ok before 5pm) then maybe Alchemest or The Refinery. I would then have a walk up to Grand Pacific for something to eat (you will need to book a table) and then its a short walk to the arena after via Cross St and will take you past most of the bigger stores etc.
Another option for food which is a bit different is the Armenian on the town hall square. If you fancy a steak Grill on the Alley is also close to Albert Sq.
If you are doing the NQ then its criminal to not eat at This and That...(closes 8pm on weekends)

They were good but I bought Stutter and One man clapping, Stutter is properly bloody weird, best stuff was post that really, Come Home, that era.
Wonder if I can still get tickets, though seeing 18 year old girls in James T shirts now would make me just feel old !

Saw them in 1990 or thereabouts, were very good, loved James as a band but loved the fact that so many girls loved them as well, mates at college who loved Heavy metal called it, predictably "Gay" but they were the ones hanging out at Motorhead gigs mainly surrounded by hairy blokes in denim, nothign quite like a girl with "Come" written on her t shirt, I found the remains of my James T shirt in the shed a couple of years back, the tales that garment could tell...

Being a fan for almost 30 years, I've seen them loads of times and they've done over 30 albums now. Their latest album "Living in extraordinary times" (came out last month) is different to the others but then all their albums are different which is why I never get bored of them. I even went to the Isle of Man to see them at Villa Gaiety, we were on the same plane as the band I got talking to a couple of them. If you can get tickets you should go as they are still bloody brilliant live and Tim likes his crowd surfing which is always amusing! Saw them last year twice, once at the little 02 in Camden and once at Kew Gardens. Tim can still sing ! Great live band... They were good but I bought Stutter and One man clapping, Stutter is properly bloody weird, best stuff was post that really, Come Home, that era.

Definitely the Northern Quarter before that gig. I'd imagine that's where the other 20000 will be going so will be a good atmosphere. I generally stick to the Tariff street end including Cottonopolis, Tariff and Dale, El Capo. Pen and Pencil will almost certainly have a pre and post show party.
Seven Brothers beerhouse in Ancoats is a short walk, but to be fair, you'll struggle to find a bad pint of beer in Manchester bars these days.
If you're a proper pizza fan then Noi Quattro, Rudy's or Honest Crust (in the Mackie Mayor) are a must.
El Taquero for Mexican.
Almost Famous for burgers.
Bundobust for Indian.
Refuge is well worth seeing.
Be careful around Piccadilly Gardens at night.
Deansgate Lock is crap, as is much of Deansgate itself.
Looks like Clint Boon is doing the afterparty at South, which will almost certainly feel like you've gone back in time to late 80's Madchester.
Enjoy....might go myself
ETA The Charlatans have done things like this in the past so maybe worth looking out for any special events.
