Going to the Opera in a couple of weeks, really looking forward to it, decided to go all out and wear my Dinner Jacket / Tuxedo.
Not worn it for ages, it's in the back of the wardrobe in a suit carrier, no idea where my shirt is.
Have bought a bow tie, which I will be learning to tie myself, question is, do I need to buy a proper frilly dress shirt, or is a normal smart shirt acceptable?

Ideally, a dress shirt will have the buttons hidden but, in reality a plain, white, double-cuffed shirt should be fine

Yeah any old shirt with visible buttons is fine. I trust you will be wearing your finest trainers too.

If you're wearing black tie the shirt needs to have a collar that goes down. Wing collar shirts are for white tie.

The bow tie needs to be plain black too. Don't wear anything coloured or that has pictures of motorbikes on it.

Have fun learning how to tie a bow tie! haha

I wear one about once every year or two, each time I completely forget and have to relearn!

But as said, plain white shirt with a full collar preferable where the shirt buttons are hidden. M&S sell some nice shirts which will be exactly what you need

Don't forget the lace cravat.
