The Shell Pump Challenge ......
You have to get the fuel as close too the nearest £10.00 in increments and you get entered into a draw......

So now there are monster queues because those participating are super slow peeing around trying to get it spot in.

FAIL.

I always used to try and get it to the exact £10 when I was younger as I'd usually pay by cash. Wasn't that difficult to do, doesn't exactly add much extra time.

Is it really creating much of a queue? Do that many people buy v-power? I guess if anything Shell are on to a winner, if someone is "aiming" for £30 and go over then maybe they push on and go for £40, and so on... so spend more money? Seems like a win to me...

Only if you start with a near empty tank otherwise it’ll be fuel covered shoes!

I'd say the promotion is clever, and not a fail, albeit there's a fail in the ad agency's website - the tab text.

It isn't only on V-Power though, it is on all fuels isn't it?

I worked in a petrol station, one customer came to the till and confessed they could only get £9.80 in the tank so had put 20p of fuel into the fire bucket because they'd wanted to spend £10.

There is an old one (I'd like to think it is true, but it's probably not) about a property developer that ran a promotion offering to pay your first year's mortgage payments.

Apparently someone bought a house on this deal after taking out a 12 month repayment mortgage and the developer hadn't considered this eventuality and have to pay off his entire mortgage.

Another that is true (it was topical when I was studying law) is the Hoover free flights promotion:

This was an epic FAIL! judge

Yep, that hoover one was a bit legendary.

I think the Shell idea is ok but not so much of a fail, more just one which isn't great but then you're quite limited when selling fuel.

Not sure about Shell pumps, but with the Tesco pumps you can set a limit of how much you want to spend or how many gallons you want to put in.

I.e. set it for £10, handle full power and it'll auto cut off at the £10 mark...

Not that I care anyway, I just brim my tank each time and pay on card. Who carries cash these days?! rolleyes

I might know "someone" who did this shortly after passing their test whistle

Most social media campaigns.

Whoda thunk giving the general public control over your marketing was a bad idea? At best you give a voice to dissatisfied customers, at worst you realise that people hate you and you've given them an avenue to troll with.

However I'd like to single out QANTAS for the worst possible timing award. Shortly after grounding the entire airline which stranded 68,000-80,000 passengers per day to win an industrial relations dispute and screw their own workers, someone in QANTAS' marketing department thought it would be a good idea to promote the use of the twitter hashtage "#QANTASluxury". Given they'd just cancelled 600 flights the response was not quite what they expected.

Susan Boyle's PR people are probably wishing they had re-read their promotional hashtag after missing its alternative message to Twitter users.

Causing great mirth on the social network on Thursday, the unfortunate choice of hashtag #Susanalbumparty to promote the singer's new album event has spawned a wealth of mock invites to the party and ridicule.

In the eighties I worked at a Jet petrol station, when they decided to run a promotion printing tokens in national papers offering a pound off if you spent a tenner or more on fuel. This is in the days fifteen quid would fill most cars up! So cut the token out sign and date it and you will get a pound change, all we had to do was send the tokens to Jet and we would get a cheque for the total amount!

Can you see were this is going? Me and my boss worked out that all we had to do was when we had the letter informing us of what date and what newspaper the token was in, the sun for example. Was to buy every copy in my case in the three news agents passed on the way to work cut them out date them stick any old signature on them and have my quid for each token.

I remember my parents getting excited about the Hoover one - tickets to fly to America

They never got the actual tickets, but they did receive a payment from Hoover for much, much more than they paid for the vacuum cleaner they bought and were happy enough with that.

Who would have thought you could go wrong offering a free pretzel to anyone with a coupon as a way to get people interested in your start-up pretzel selling franchise?

Well, one American housewife found out to her considerable expense that forgetting to include the disclaimer of "Limited to one per customer" on the coupon cost her the time and expense of making over 300 pretzels for one enterprising family of 25! Poor Marge Simpson of Springfield lost most of her investment following this, as well as "Free Pretzel Day" at the local sports field where nobody actually ate any of the pretzels. After an unwise business decision with some shady characters, Marge had to return to her role as homemaker many thousands of dollars out of pocket.

I think the northern irish governements 'renewable heating incentive' might be one the of the best:

- give out a subsidy for using 'renewable fuel' in your biomass boiler
- set subsidy at higher price than fuel costs
- set no cap on your subsidy and guarantee it for 20 years
- the more you burn the more you earn........
- cause your government to collapse......

Well, it was 1 of a number of causes.

There were farmhouses that couldn't afford to turn their heating off.

The horse solarium was my favourite: https://www.irishnews.com/news/2017/05/26/news/rhi...
