....a Brummie offensive?

Not someone from Walsall, Wolverhampton or anywhere else in the West Midlands that may have a similar accent. Birmingham. Someone born within the city of Birmingham.

I wouldn't have thought so.

Manchester - Mancunian
London - Cockney (although the pedants will mention Bow bells)
Bristol - Bristolian
Birmingham - Brummie

Right?

has someone been professionally offended again?

I get told off daily by some snowflake or other wouldn't worry about it.

Don't get Geordie's and Makem confused though - that is offensive.

Incidentally - I used the phrase "slowly slowly catchy monkey" and had a drama over it.

Had no idea it was bad..........still don't know why

Exactly my point.

A Brummie I know has taken offence saying it's derogatory. As in, I've said I just don't understand you Brummies (with a smiley face) and referring to a group of their family who are joining us 'Southerners' for a group holiday as 'The Brummie contingent' when arranging travel plans.

Personally I see nothing wrong. And just wanted reassurance/putting in my place.

I just don't know these days what is and isn't offensive and the parameters and consistency of it all is all over the place.

Call someone a derogatory term mentioning the colour of their skin and it's racist (and rightly so).

Call someone a fat bztard (for example or another derogatory term about their appearance) and it seems perfectly acceptable.

I've heard the original name for Birmingham was 'Brumich-am' (not sure of the spelling), and that's where 'Brummie' comes from.
I recently moved from Wolves to B'ham and notice that most call themselves Brummies. They call me a Yam-Yam and they are surprised when I explain to them the reason why we are called so.
I nor them take offence at the names.

They have a massive chip on their shoulders because they suspect (rightly) that their accent makes them sound a bit slow on the uptake. smile Also the word brummie is usually prefixed with the words stupid and fking biggrin

Are you sure he's an actual Brummie and not from another area that consider themselves superior?

Anyway - ask him how many sugars he has with his Kipper Tie.

I've been left the North East for 23 years.............and still have a minor accent.

I'm still proud when I'm referred to as Geordie.

If I was a Brummie I'd probably have shot myself, which is why he was probably offended.

All that being said, you can't be offended for being called what you are!!

world gone mad!
