Need to send the rear silencer section from my old car from me in Aberdeen to a buyer in Derbyshire. Tried a couple of places I've used before but they're all saying the size and weight means it'll have to go on a pallet and looking at about 85 quid to send it. When I bought the thing originally it did not come on a pallet, just black stretch wrap around a load of bubble wrap if I remember rightly, and didn't cost anything like that much to ship. The overall dimensions are about 1.2m x 1.2m x 0.3m and 20kg.

So wondering, someone here must have done this before. What's the best way to pack the thing up so it makes the trip safely - just buy a massive roll of bubble wrap and stretch wrap and go mad or is there a smarter/safer method? Any suggestions as to a reasonably priced courier option?

It's a bit of a pain. I have sent a few catback exhausts in the past with mid-pipe still attached and had no issues however the last one I sent about a month ago was rejected and sent back to me due to not meeting size requirements (this was through DPD via Paisley Freight).

Have you tried it on Shiply?

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought of Shiply so I put a request for quotes there but so far almost all of them have come back with silly numbers (£450 the highest) which are far higher than the likes of Parcel Force etc.

I've got some packaging now so I'll get it packed up, measured and weighed and see what the options are.

Why is it 1.2m wide as well as long?

Interparcel is coming in at £35 using Parcelforce for those dimensions

It's the back box so overall it's roughly as wide as it is long.

Parcelforce and hermes are both reasonable for that, I've sent loads of heavy carparts via Parcelforce, as long as t's strongly wrapped they don't look twice. Rubble sacks and gaffer tape are your friend, and tape a copy of the delivery note to the part itself before you wrap it.

Thanks for that, I'll check them out.

I've used them several times for wheels without any issue so I tried them first. They have a listing specifically for car exhausts but the dimensions limits suggest it's intended for a long, narrow pipe rather than a back box. I emailed them with the rough dimensions for the part I have and they said it would need to go on a pallet and that was looking expensive.

Be wary with Hermes.

I wanted to ship a diff to Co. Durham, but their website indicated that some car parts were verboten, not very clear really so I called them to ask and first of all the lady said that car parts were fine, then I pressed her on it a few times and she went away to ask someone, then she came back and said that ALL car parts are forbidden and ANY car part sent would be taken and disposed of at their depot.

Whether that's what actually happens I don't know - I took the diff myself rather than risk it.

From Paisley's website:

'Each parcel cannot exceed 30kg as it will be rejected at the collection depot and returned to the collection address incurring a failed collection charge.
Not exceeding 2m x 0.3m x 0.3m. Goods need to be fully enclosed with bubble wrap and cardboard with an address label on each parcel.
Please securely affix your own delivery labels to each parcel.'

Thats well within the op's weight's and dimensions so once wrapped up he should be good!

When I sent a set of wheels it was a TNT van that turned up and the bloke couldnt have given two sts about dimensions etc, he was just happy I helped him out to the van with them. Manners go a long way!

I use parcelforce for all large car parts, exhausts / bumpers / wheels / doors etc. Their "large" service is good and on the website you can get a discount code aswell, AP10 i think it is

Eh? The exhaust is 1.2m x 1.2m x 0.3m, that's bigger than Paisley's limit...

I realise this is an old post but, did you ever found a suitable courier? I have the same problem, also sending from Aberdeen as it happens. My exhaust is 1.3m x1.4m. Thanks.

Just had a look through my email, looks like I used Parcel Monkey and paid about £43 for it in the end - hope that helps!

Years ago someone working in a parcelforce depot stole a 205gti full stainless system I was sending to Wales, went missing despite being sent recorded and signed for.
Took almost 6 months for royal mail to pay out. Exhaust amd the thief were never seen again, cost me a fortune to wrap and sent it too.

The parcel networks insurance normally pay at a rate of £1 per kilo no matter what it is hence trying to send a 10 grand Rolex is not a good idea!

The op has sorted this now but for anybody else looking
