Britannia as Great Britain as a whole is generally embodied with a female persona, but what gender do you think embodies the constituent parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, if any?

What if some part of the country wakes up one morning and decides it wants to identify as a coffee table that day? Do you want to be outed on Twitter for gender shaming and have your life ruined?

Britannia -

Ireland actually does have a female "name" that is associated with it - Kathleen Ní Houlihan. She is a female symbol for Ireland and crops up in ancient Irish mythology.

When the Irish Free State was founded in 1922 and a few years later started designed and printing its own currency, an image of "Kathleen Ní Houlihan" was used as the image on paper notes. It still features today on modern notes as part of the watermark -

Ironically, the woman who posed for the art work was a member of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, Lady Lavery - who was a well known artist in her own right.

It wasn't a "sell buy" date. It was a "Use By" date smile

Those original £ notes were discontinued in 1977 and replaced by a hideous piece of modern art -

Lady Lavery was relegated to being the watermark. The replacement female image is that of Queen Maeve - who was the Queen of Connacht in mythical times.

These pound notes disappeared for good when Ireland joined the Euro in 2002.
