Somewhere on another planet is another civilization with a completely different year to date than ours. What was their measure and milestone for the start of their first recorded year? Did they use a messiah? Or perhaps something else. Maybe a new beginning after a cataclysmic event.

We base our year before Christ and after Christ.
I think it is really something that one part of a population, whether majority or minority have managed to somehow impress upon the entire world a date and it is just accepted as such worldwide.

I would think as the world began to "find one another" of dfferent and various cultures across the globe that other such less developed populations would have a completely different year, if one at all.

So this comes to my question. We havr BC and AD. So what year is it really, from the actual start of recorded human history?

Interesting article about it all - lots of change over the years, who knows what's real! Time is nothing but a human concept anyway...

your stated gregorian calendar date isnt what the whole world uses though. Take the buddhist calendar, the year is currently 2561 in places such as Thailand

Difficult to pin down as we've had very different calendaring systems since then.

Earliest recorded history is accepted to be about 5000 years ago. The first known widespread use of a calendar was the Sumerians in 2100 BC but this today would be wildly inaccurate as it was a lunar calendar rather than a solar one.

As for the exact start of recorded human history, where do you define that? Cave paintings, the first use of pictographs/pictograms, first use of cuneiform? There really isn't a way to pin it down to an exact year or even a decade but 5000-ish years is generally accepted as the span of recorded human civilisation.

Whilst our current measurement of time is mathematically derived, the year we assign to it is entirely arbitrary. We've defined ours according to an old book, lots of cultures do that, the Buddhist calendar puts the year at 2561. The Islamic year is 1440. We could declare 2016 the Ascension of Trump as year zero, as long as we keep using a solar calendar we'll be fine no matter what year it is.

BTW, another planet would have a different solar orbit and rotation, so their calendar system would be different to ours (as would the Martian year, which is 687 of our Earth days).

Is it? Time is one of the 4 universal dimensions. Our version of time - ie hours, minuets, seconds is a human concept - but 'time' is written into the very fabric of the universe.

In order to even have a stab at answering your question, you'd need to first answer and define what "recorded human history" is and when it started.

I would read what Kant and Schopenhauer have to say about that before being so sure.

Personally, I like to go by Star Date.

When the fabric of the universe is translated by a human...
Exactly - our narrow, imperfect interpretation is probably totally at odds with what another civilisation would come up with. Some of the principles would be the same, but to think of it dimensionally as we do is likely a function of our brains.

You're right about the south Shropshire thing. Still we'll be seeing men on the moon before too long, mark my words.
