Mods: I think the Lounge is the right place for this conversation, because I want it to be about the bigger picture, not any specific news event, but also topics like the interaction of news and social media, the business of news, along with self employment, freelance journalism. I think this is the best place to catch all those things.

Very often when newsworthy events unfold a number of videos and stills will appear on social media from people caught up in it. These post will often see a number of news agencies and outlets jump on them asking for rights to reuse them. They will often offer little more than credit.

Social media is starting to see a little bit of backlash against these requests with many responders calling out the agencies for not offering fair fees.

Some of these clips are undoubtedly very valuable to the agencies, when they can be used internationally raising potentially many thousands of pounds in fees.

To take the NUJ rates for example, these are £300 for each 8 seconds, or part of that is broadcast nationally.

I wonder what others think of this, should these clips be free for agencies, should they pay, should citizen journalism be a thing?

I agree with the sentiment. Payment is worth having.

I suspect that if there was an 8sec threshold, News organisations would trim the clip to below that.

Other point of course is that if you got say £1200 for a 30sec clip. You would presumably be needing to declare and pay tax on it. Since you would effectively become a content producer Cant see the BBC/ITV/Sky giving cash laugh

I wonder how long it would be before there was a "You've been framed" situation on the TV news, where situations had been deliberately engineered so they could be filmed and the proceeds shared.
