I found a Johnson's Dictionary 50p in my pocket this morning. Never having seen one before I googled it and and found a story in the Express for one selling for nearly £2.5k yikes
https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/984326/e...

The search bar in google also had several links to people selling them on e-bay for between £2500 and ...99p. Dealers seem to be selling perfect condition unused ones for £4.50. How the hell does someone end up falling for a £2500 one?

If it were true i would have £5k sitting in my collection with just 2 coins rolleyes

Someone I know bought 2 Kew gardens 50p coins for her and her mother as an investment, I had the 'a fool and their money are easily parted' phrase going through my head when she told me she paid £97 for one and £93 for the other!

All anyone needs to do is go on ebay and look at the 'sold' listings for any so called rare 50p/£2 coins, you wont see any having sold for lots of money

The best price wise is the kew gardens 50p which is worth about £70 or more sometimes. Most of the "rare" 50ps are worth less than 10 quid. That said I have a collection of about 100 now and even if they are only worth 5 quid each it's still something for nothing!!

I had a load of the Beatrix Potter coins, selling for "up to £2k" apparently, looking on ebay there were a few up for close to that but when you look at the sold listings, they all sold for no more than £2 each, most for 99p

I keep "edition" coins as interesting curios for the kids. That said, I sold some olympic 50p's for £2 during the olympics.

I looked at the "Triathlon" 50p during the Olympics. When you could get them from WHSmiths
Didn't buy one
Looked around the time of Rio16. And they were a tenner each or so!
Didn't buy then either!
Just checked today. Still a tenner upwards laugh

By chance I actually found an old large 5p and an American quarter today in my spare room (bit tidying!) Probably worth fk all! laugh

I’ll give you 50p for it (so long as free P&P)
