On the heels of the new buzzword "Plogging" I realise that I have been Plycling on my three and a half mile bike ride each morning on a circuit around our deserted lane where I did not pass a single vehicle on the fifteen minute journey
I picked up everything yesterday and here is my haul today pictured below.
Over 365 days it might half fill a bin lorry
All the usual items, double chocolate cookies, Costa cups and energy drink cans. The amount of these each day is unbelievable, each full of caffeine and sugar and CO2
They cannot be much good as the people drinking them obviously have not enough energy to even take them home and put them in a bin

This started me thinking about the persecution of motorists concerning CO2 emissions and yet nothing is done to stop the CO2 from these drinks which must add up to a great volume worldwide

So a ban on any carbonated drink would have not only the desired effect as regards emissions but would also make a lot of people healthier and keep their teeth away from the sugars

I try in vain to lead by example!

Scum on the run.

Maybe if you keep following the trail it will lead you to East Ardsley.

That is very civic minded of you. Well done. It is such a shame we have to share this planet with these people.

We should be able to find a crater somewhere that they can all live in surrounded by their own st rather than littering this country. I do wonder what their houses look like- presumably litter all over the floor?

My driveway has a particularly nice outlook and I’m forever finding the detritus from scum who’ve parked on my driveway to eat their lunch and who have then dumped the contents of their car on my property. They should be shot.

Steady on Old Bean! There's a process very close to our collective hearts that produces CO2 in some quantity: brewing! I suppose it's not beyond the wit of man to capture it though, but then what?

IIRC the actual CO2 in fizzy drinks that makes them fizzy is created as a by product of other industry, e.g. burning hydrocarbons and brewing. so it would be released to the atmosphere anyway I guess and they are just trapping it a bit longer.

But transporting the drinks and the energy needed to manufacture the products in the first place will create CO2 emissions.

There's a recreation ground close to my house where I often take my two dogs for a walk in the morning. This park has two dog waste bins, but no bins for general litter inside the park, and only one near one of the exit gates.

Oscar is a lab/collie cross, with more emphasis on collie, and has a habit of picking up discarded litter - water bottles, cans, plastic wrappers...anything which is a bit tactile. He often brings them back to me, and I keep making a mental note to take a bin liner with me and fill it as I go. Truly astonishes me how selfish people are. They would no doubt be the same people who would be the first to complain about the park not being maintained to standards.

Is "Plycling" some kind of new term to mean "picking up litter as you walk/cycle around"?

I don't really like the name, as I don't really know how to say it, but I definitely approve of the idea.

I don't really do it on my cycle to work, as I treat the ride as a training session, and don't have a lot of space to carry litter, but when walking the dog I try to pick up anything that I find, then drop it in the next bin I go past.

I wish more people did it. I hope it gains a lot of traction.

I guess it is 'thing' to invent/coin/portmanteau new words so if it makes the millenials+ do something us older types have done for decades anyway because it now sounds cool/shui (or whatever tthe trend word is) in a tweet then fine.

I was recently picking up litter in a small green space on my development. A few people passed me, couple of the older folks (many of the flats where I live are over 55s, which usually means over 70s) stopped me and said how nice it was to see someone taking care of the place.

One woman walked past, about the same age as me (between 27 and 34) who I've said good morning to a few times, stopped and asked me what on earth I was doing and that there were "people" to do that. I presume she means the management company who do send people round periodically to tidy up the grounds.

I just responded "I live here..."

I think I invented the word Plycling as a reaction to Plogging (picking up litter while jogging) which is all the rage.

I had to buy a side saddle zip up thingy that hangs from my rear pannier to cope with the amount of stuff I find, It is strange that you could wait half an hour to see a car on the little lanes around here but I suppose that is what makes it attractive for litterers.

I know that people know they should not do it because there are points on the road where there is no litter (visible from main road) and points where there is a lot (corners and brows of hills)
The other thing I notice is that I have never picked up a health food packet, or anything remotely healthy. Apart from energy drinks with aggressive names like Monster, Full Throttle, Hell Energy, No Fear, Rip It, Urge Intense and Venom Energy to name a few.
I assume drinking these in great quantity gives you a headache as the other items I find in abundance are empty aspirin packets. People just want to chuck out the excrement in their lives I suppose not to be reminded of it.

We have recently had 'Take your litter home' and 'CCTV in operation' temporary signs stood up along a busy A road nearby.

Yet, not one camera in sight.

If school children were occasionally made to pick up litter in a high supervised manner with perhaps a tractor and trailer and a stop go sign adult at either end, they may say to Mum and Dad "If you chuck that bloody fing out the winda, I gotta pick the bloody fing up!"
