Friend and I were traveling together for a friend's wedding in Bordeaux. I booked a hire car and was given the option of buying an excess waiver for €15. Bought it. Managed to scrape the car along a skip. Excess was €900

So €15 very very well spent!

Gina Ford’s ‘Contented Little Baby’ book. Cost £9.95 and using her method all 3 kids slept wonderfully from 6 weeks on. Awesome value.

Single trip euro breakdown cover for £20.

Took my motorbike (zx6r) over to the continent and fell off, single vehicle accident, in Germany.

Euro hire car to calais, ferry and UK hire car home, plus recovery of bike all paid by the breakdown company.

My first house then subsequent ones , bailing out to another country just prior to the property market going crazy here . More by luck than judgement I hasten to add .

Travel insurance through a work programme.

£6 a month. We travel most months. Wife needed medical care in the USA, which amounted to $165,000.

Good deal!

By the time I added up solicitor's fees, mortgage payments before the decree absolute , and my half of the house which I gave her, getting rid of my first wife so I could be with my second , £350k was great value.

When i tried to claim from a critical illness policy they said i had to have a terminal illness and had to be told that i would die within 12 months before i could claim.

Bought a sheepskin aviator jacket for £400 that I earned from working full-time in the summer holidays when I was 16.

It was my first ‘big’ purchase as I wanted one so much, hence working the summer. I still use it now when it’s cold so has been a great investment and still brings a smile to my face.

198r - As I was signing up for the finance deal on a Kawasaki Z650, the dealer asked me if I wanted payment protection over the 18-month term - it wasn’t much, so I agreed.

On the way home, I got taken out by an old dear in a Volvo 440 who claimed she didn’t see me, but told me I was going too fast......

I was off work for 18 months with a relatively minor injury- bike was paid for in full

This story would be much better if I’d kept the bike - only going up in value now....

2 tickets to see England vs Australia in the run up to the 2003 world cup. We were finishing off a big house renovation, cash was getting tight & we were cutting everything back to save for the last job - stairs &upstairs carpets. Then Amex sent a hospitality offer for the match. Did we really want to look back on the house with fond memories of...the stair carpet? It took about 5 seconds to decide f@ck it & have one of the best afternoons of our lives: lunch, drinks, match seats, then drinks & laughs for several hours with: Peter O'Toole, Zinzan Brooke, John Eales, Tim Horan, Francois Peinaar, Ross Kemp, David Campese, Will Carling (& wife - he was the host for the event) & most of the two teams - including Dallaglio, Wilkinson, Robinson (my absolute rugby hero), Healey, Burke, Flatley. Unforgettable day, some of the conversations, I'll remember for the rest of my life. Worth every penny, whereas the eventual stair carpet, was brown, wool, quite nice &, erm, that's about it.

With my first pay packet 21 years ago, I bought an Omega Seamaster Professional for £650. I've worn it every day since, had it serviced once and it still looks pretty much brand new. I absolutely love it.

A close second is the DeLonghi coffee machine I bought a few years ago.

I used to have no off road parking other than my garage which was annoying when owning 3 cars, however I did have a large front garden, so for relatively little money (I think about £2k) I converted it into a driveway, the convenience it gives is great. pretty boring thing but one that has genuinely made my life easier/better
