I just had a call on my BT line where when I answered the call I got the standard BT message along the lines of 'The number you have called cannot be found'

I hung up. What was that about then?

Sounds like an autodialer trying to connect you to "Alan" in Delhi but they got the config wrong.

That was my thought as well, an autodialler scam that was messed up.

I forgot to 1471 and we've had a call since then.

If it happens again then I'll 1471.

I couldn't see how it could be a proper scam.

I just got a strange phone call from an Indian-sounding lady asking for me by name.

I told her that I was DS Johnson of Stockport CID Fraud Division and how could I be of assistance? She abruptly hung up. frown

1471 gave me the caller's number which I looked up and found was from Portadown.
I do not know anybody in that town.

Shame really, she sounded so nice...

Everyone who receives such a call should tell them that, it would really freak them out biggrin

Similar experience a few years ago, I answered a call which was a pre recorded message. I put the phone down. a few minutes later I went to make a call, picked up the phone and the pre recorded message was still going. I tried to disconnect several times but gave up. The next Vigin bill showed a call cost on this one call of just under £20. They insisted that I had made the call, wouldnt accept my word that I had not made the call.

Oftel, at least at that time, dont take action of the dispute is less than £20.

But how can in an incoming call run up a bill on a BT landline?

That was the mystery. It was Virgin rather than BT and they insisted that we had made the call. Only two of us in the house, I answered the call which was to a premium rate number.

I didn't actually ask for the calls or want them. Both nuisance calls.

Anyway reception out here in the sticks can be patchy, don't even think about Three.
