How much money have you earnt in your lifetime?
Discussion
By coincidence, I did this calculation the other day - no idea why, perhaps as I realised I'd been working for 20 years after university, perhaps the beginning of a mid-life crisis - who knows!!
Must admit the total earnings figure did shock me at first. Wondered where it all went until I remembered taxes, NI, mortgages, pensions, savings, bills and day to day living costs which took a huge slice.
Not going to mention figures but I still think I should have more to show for it - better financial planning required in future!!

BCG/Sutton Trust ran some numbers, suggesting average lifetime earnings for the following groups:
Oxbridge degree: £1.8m
Russell Group degree: £1.6m
Non-Russell Group degree: £1.4m
A-Levels: £973k
No qualifications: £696k
However, biggest determinant (unsurprisingly) is earnings in the first 5 years after graduation.
Most people's income rises as they get older/more experienced/senior - so if you're on £100k 5 years after graduation - then even if it stayed flat from that point on (unlikely), you'd be over £3m over the lifetime.
Very interesting. I imagine those aren’t too far off. Non Russell group degree for me and if I continue to work for the next 25 years with a bit of luck on the horses thrown in and house price rises I might be close to that figure. Oxbridge degree: £1.8m
Russell Group degree: £1.6m
Non-Russell Group degree: £1.4m

No qualifications: £696k

35, A-Levels, approx £785k so far, which is pretty rubbish considering most PH'ers spend that on holidays and Rolex watches each week
Not really, it’s still an average of £46k p/a for the 17yrs worked (assuming you have worked since leaving college at 18) - which is £20k over the U.K. national average as it stands today!alorotom said:

To be fair it's a lot more than I thought I'd have earned when I left college at 17 (only going back to sit my exams) due to having a Son, just when you see what a lot of people on here are making and the life choices that provides i.e. retiring early it does make me question if me not fully prioritising my career vs my sporting goals which are now pretty much done at 35 was worth itbrickwall said:

I’ve exceeded Oxbridge on A-levels
