Paypal seem to be getting too big for their boots lately!!!

I've had a Paypal account since 2005 without a single issue or complaint

Send 30 quid to my mate , with an albeit stupid reference (think ISIS related) , account instantly blocked
As is my mates and he has £180 in his Paypal balance he is now not able to get to for 180 days - what are they doing, investing it?

Then I have to phone Paypal to "explain myself" (i was in tears laughing) - like I'm sat in a cave in Islamabad going "brothers yes let's send money on Paypal with actual references to what we're actually doing"
I've always sent stupid and received payment references and never had a problem

After uploading my passport and utility bills (I'm guessing so the CIA can come round) they told me that my account has been permanently blocked.
But the reason is due to the fact I was 14 when I made my Paypal account.... I'm 27 now... doesn't matter! :-)
Blocked.

They will allow me to create another account, how nice of them, but has to be a different E-mail and I have to wait until next week to wait for a transaction to clear before they will remove my bank account from my old Paypal account, and I'm not allowed to remove my card details
So they have my details stored indefinitely then...! :-)

more recently,

Used my Mrs' account to sell a turbo. (she's had hers for over 10 years and is fully verified etc)

Guy paid me £1600 only for Paypal to then hold the payment until delivery.
So I had to send a £1600 piece of hardware out, without actually seeing a penny.
Shipping cost me £120 which was great , so now I'm £1720 out of pocket :-) !!!!!!

And apparently you have to wait for 21 days before the money will be released...incase of problems !!!

I wish there was another method of payment to use, but if you don't have a Paypal account you're inherently dodgy , they really do have a monopoly on the online market.

Seems like they are pretty much on the ball then. You could have been a person of suspicion and they didn't ignore it.

Probably best to stop with the silly references.

It's a bit like complaining about airport security when you jokingly say you have a bomb in your luggage and you get arrested.

Yep, entirely your own fault. In these times where financial transactions are monitored for suspicious behaviour, you thought it'd be a giggle to send a payment with ISIS references. Well done.

That said, and for a plethora of different reasons, PayPal are indeed a bunch of arrogant wkers and need to be bought down a peg or two.

Sorry OP, I agree with this.

You could use cash, write a cheque, do an instant balance transfer, barter with goods & service etc.

Many people's lives ticking along just fine without using Paypal.

It was a giggle.
I don't care about that, they blocked my account for being under age when I made it.

Fully aware it was stupid thing to do, I am stupid so I don't expect anything else biggrin

But using my Mrs account, customer has their turbo, I don't have my £1600, and Paypal are holding onto it for 21 days.............here's the fairness in that??
Nothing linking me to my Mrs' account at all, all done under her name.

If there was genuinely another alternative to Paypal then that's fine but when 90% of online retailers accept Paypal and for Ebay it is a must have, as well as selling parts privately on Facebook etc then what else can you do?

People don't like sending bank transfer as they thikn you will scam them.......as I said for the online market place they really have the monopoly.

I'm not bothered, I will get another Paypal account, they said I can create a new one, it's more the fact they are holding onto money that doesn't belong to them for an inordinate amount of time.

As a US company PayPal are incredibly sensitive about this sort of thing, casing point, last year I tried to order my Mrs a new Pandora charm for Christmas from their biggest UK supplier with the innocent sounding name of Shining Path.

Turns out Shining Path also happens to be the name of the Communist Party of Peru who are a known militant group and PayPal promptly blocked the transaction.

Pandora have since renamed the charm Shining Line!!

This.

Certain keywords arouse suspicion, I'm surprised GCHQ haven't sent MI5 round to your gaff.....smile

I started selling on e bay.Using paypal for payment Prior to that I had bought. First 2 items I sold were hi fi DACS. they went for around a ton each. Paypal held onto the money for 21 days or when the buyer left feedback - whichever came first.
That was 7 years ago.
Them holding money is nothing new - sorry to say

This is a bit of a huge coincidence.

I normally send payments to friends with stupid notes added to them. I sent a payment the other day with note which also included "ISIS" in an obvious joking/non-serious way, payment immediately went under review and still is at the moment.

First time its every happened.

OP, aren't you "ethnic" as well?

If so, you are on some seriously bad lists now. And we're not talking about Santa.

Another 2 possibilities - when was the last time your other half used her account for selling / received ££££ to her Paypal (seeing as you say it was all done under her account not yours) - if not recently then the payment could have been put on hold as suspicious activity.

Similar to the above - possibly the value of ££££ involved has meant the transactions been flagged as suspicious and put on hold?

I remember a user on a Ford RS forum a couple of years ago having a similar issue - sold an engine & gearbox from the car he was breaking but offered to courier both items as he had contacts via his work. Seeing as both items together sold for £1200 and he took payment via Paypal, the payment got frozen as suspicious and he got it released 10 days later after proving it was an innocent transaction albeit for a large amount of £££.

I'm not calling you a fibber or anything like that. It is very unusual that you haven't had communication about it before the amount was taken away and given back. If its an ebay sale as you allude to the buyer usually has to open a case (in this case being non receipt ) and you would be invited to upload tracking information as a start.

Unless things have changed, I'm pretty sure accepting PayPal is mandatory on eBay. Last time I listed something (admittedly a couple of years ago), it was not possible to remove the 'PayPal' payment method from the list.

Thats a standard eBay policy now for sellers who meet a certain set of criteria :

1. You’re a new seller on eBay; or
2. Your current performance has fallen below the minimum standard for all eBay sellers; or
3. The payment you received may be considered unusual for your selling pattern.

The "minimum standard" one includes a whole load of BS : https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policie...

She hasn't sent/received high payment amounts before no.

However I don't see what right Paypal have to restrict access to the money, or to force you to post the item and for it to be delivered before they will release the money.

I invoiced a guy for £700 for a piece of work I did for him. I got a PayPal message to say money had been credited to me but when I accessed it I could only draw £680.

He didn't realise they they took a cut and I'm still waiting.

I had suggested he pays to my account by BACS but he did it his way. Humbug.
