Escaping the slums.
Discussion
I grew up in the Kingston Upon Thames, Hampton Court area, just outside of London.
Glad to have escaped such slums.
The home counties are rife with such dreadful areas.
Does any one have any similar stories or know of anyone else, famous perhaps, that have also escaped dreadful UK slum areas?

Apart from GSK’s various Pharma operations over the years and new Bioscience centre...just like a favela in Rio.
Only route out for poor people is F1.
I grew up in the heady affluent parts of South Yorkshire.
All down hill from there though and now live in the slums of Chester.
I'm thinking of taking up transit van deliveries to drag myself back up the social ladder though.
Yea he's a right t
t. Such drivel being spoken on the dedicated thread by his apologists too

Think 'Peachtrees' in Judge Dredd and remove the glamour.
Only the most priviledged got out - those with help from on high (like the local Vicar's son - how else do you get to be Tech Dir of McLaren GP?) or willing to sell their soul (Saturday boy at the paper shop - Guy Hands).
It was tough, man. You had to be there.

My wife was born and raised in Walker, Newcastle - none of her friends have left there, it’s a large area predominantly inhabited by 3-4 generations of families - mostly on benefits, not working and knocking out kids (in both senses). There is a real property phenomenom / bubble there too as prices are very stable and properties always in demand for these reasons too
I once spoke to a young nurse who was living in a flat on Scarborough Road there. She had needed a flat at shirt notice to start a job up here and a deal she had in the table had fallen through, so she took a 12 month tenancy at a dump on Scarborough Road at the last minute without seeing the place other than a few interior photos. She couldn't wait to leave. Melted bin on the pavement outside, downstairs flat number displayed in spray paint on the wall.
