Evening PH.

There is bound to be someone on here who knows a bit about coins or knows of somewhere to go.

I've been given some coins. One is a sovergien from 1866 with George and the Dragon on.

The other is a coin with Churchill on from 1965 (five shilling i believe). I've found a bit about this one and it isn't worth much at all.

Does anyone know anything about the value of the sovergien? It was given to my mum to give to me with the intention it might be worth more later to sell to help towards a deposit etc.

Thanks smile

A lot of the value of coins is dictated by it's condition, with gold coins it's not unknown for little bits to have been nipped off, value wise anywhere between a couple hundred to £1k i guess

For the sovereign, join this forum, take some decent photos and ask their opinion.

The Churchill one is a Crown, you're right that it' 5 shillings, commemorative one made after he died. Plenty on ebay from 99p.

Sovereigns were gold, so minimum value is the weight times whatever the price of gold is and then maybe more if it's a rare one. Google looks like it's around £300 so might help with a deposit on a car but not on a house frown

An 1866 Sovereign is worth to collectors £55, £85, £140 depending on whether the condition is Very Fine, Extra Fine or Uncirculated.

An 1866 sovereign should have a Shield rather than St George which started in 1871.

I think you've made a mistake there. It must be worth more than that scrap.

It might be 1886 and not 1866 but it is St George on the back and not the shield.

Looks like I'm not going to be selling them for millions, but can put it towards something for the house smile

The value to collectors is taken from Spinks coin values for England, 2017 edition, emphasis on collectors values not scrap metal,
