Who died after burning their leg on a motorcycle exhaust?

This is driving me mad. I'm sure he was an explorer / adventurer in the T.E. Lawrence style... died in the 30's? The irony was that he'd achieved so much and then had a fairly ordinary death by sepsis.

Any help would be appreciated, have been searching online for an hour to no avail.

Are you thinking of Bentley-Boy Tim Birkin, who died of sepsis after burning his arm on the exhaust of his Maserati ?

Are you thinking of 'Tim' Birkin? One of the original Bentley boys, who died after burning himself on the exhaust which then led to sepsis.
