So My Step-Daughter just signed off for the last time.

13 years with the Signals, 3 tours (one at a FOB in Lash, one doing ECM for the paras and one at Bastion)

Apparently - If you want a leaving gift you have to buy it yourself...quality treatment. No wonder they are struggling to retain soldiers !

To be fair i don't know too many companies that would buy you a leaving gift either. Whip round of colleagues yes but the man isn't going to do anything for sub 20 years and even then not too common.

She will have earned a medal for her service in Afghanistan, no? Is that not good enough?

I told her to get a Tank as a momento ! biggrin

Anyway - her fiance is in the rifles stationed at Catterick. He's a sniper by trade and was moved from Chepstow and stationed there to train the new recruits. He has also signed off and will be out later this year.

That's 2 decent soldiers gone because they couldn't stand the BS anymore. It's very worrying to me.

I think I get what you are trying to say, but the example you are using isn't the best. Saying people are leaving because they don't get a leaving gift doesn't read as I think you intend it to do!

What Tricky said...

We occasionally get expenses claims for leaving presents/new baby shower/sorry your cat has died gifts for colleagues. They get knocked back - if you care so much about your colleagues YOU pay for the gift.

Why are they leaving?

If they're not enjoying it them it seems sensible that they leave. The army isn't going to change, and I doubt it's changed much since they joined.

I left the RN when I'd had enough, however I was a massively different person to the one that joined. Was still the best period of my life though.

It sounds like they need to get Capita in to build a new whizzy system for ordering leaving presents.

I'll inform the minister.

I got similar - a MP5K from the Cpls Mess back in the 90's!

Jesus, what a petty moan. Leaving 'gifts' are given out by a persons respective Mess.

If she was a Cpl or Snr rank then yes, she should have got a leaving gift as she would have been paying out for everyone else on her Mess bill. Did she let her Mess commitee know that she didn't have anything?
If she was a signaller then she may be at the mercy of a 'whip-round' and if that's the case, perhaps she wasn't too popular...

OP - you have a funny idea about what the British Army is.

Everyone leaves. Sometimes it's when they choose and sometimes the time is chosen for them. But where do leaving gifts come into it and who GAF anyway?

(I was given an ice bucket which I still use....)

Yeah, I got a great leaving gift and piss up too and I only did seven years.

Maybe it's just for those that are liked and don't have winging parents...

This is a weird thread.

The reason the British Army can't recruit is because they don't buy leaving presents? Does anyone's employer buy leaving presents?
