I got told recently by a psychiatrist that I lack empathy.

This would appear to mean I am either psychopath, sociopath, narcissist or sadist.

Should I worry or just continue to work out those tendencies by posting on here?? evil

I find as long as you can be polite then lack of empathy isn't an issue, always seem to work for me.

You can teach yourself empathy.

Have a read of Seven Habits of Highly Effective people and it has a couple of key points that might help you as it did me, namely 'to be understood, you first have to understand' and also talks about 'emotional bank accounts' which was something completely alien to me before reading the book.

It's a great book, and it changed my life.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, or even that by not being so makes you less effective as a person or individual (personally or professionally)

I have read the aforementioned book as well as others and been through several rounds of exec team building with emotional piggy banks for various organisations, although imho often it’s lack of empathy that makes for more effective and successful negotiators (depends of field of course) and leaders

I don’t see the big deal. I was diagnosed in 2017 with a cluster B anti social personality disorder after going through months of dealing with the mental health teams. First they thought bipolar type 2 then I was diagnosed with borderline personality and then anti social personality. Non stop having to go over my childhood and events and being asked the same thing in different ways by different mental health workers. Then given a diagnosis by the psychiatrist.
I still manage to hold a job, very difficult for me I must add, I have a wife and kids and life goes on. My wife cried at one of the visits as she stated she feels I miss out on so much in life due to not having the capability to feel the way “normal” people feel.

Are they diagnosing you with a personality disorder?

Also. If you get a personality disorder diagnosed and it’s on your medical reports, you will find some treat you differently in the medical profession.

Am sure there are plenty of people with no empathy leading perfectly harmless lives.

I remember a bloke wondering out loud about what it must be like to feel bad about his actions towards others.

He had a very normal and attractive girlfriend. I have no idea what she got out of it as he was loathsome in every aspect. She held down a job as a primary school teacher. His main income was draining country parking meters.
