I've a friend who's a fireman and I noticed that he hardly ever puts out fires. Curiosity got the better of me and I checked the statistics for last year... 566K call outs were made over the UK, and only 170K were for actual fires.

The boredom explains why they're so keen to cut the roof off every single car at an RTC, whether it's necessary or not.

If it's a problem for you, you could always take up a life of arson. Anyways aren't they usually branded "Fire and Rescue Service" these days?

That's a good thing.

Big part is about the fire prevention, surely?

There is an argument that the fire and ambulance services should be combined, as they are in many other countries.

I was about to post this. It seems like a logical way forward.

Just my opinion.

Are there any other professions whose initial primary function is no longer their primary function?

They are tending to come under the control of Police and Crime Commissioners now.

They are like insurance. You think they are expensive and unnecessary until you actually need the service, then it seems cheap.

The emergency services are a bit like insurance, you hope to never need them, so if they are sitting around getting bored that's ok with me.

They do a good job when they are needed.

Well apart from maybe the 4th.

The firemen wont like that. They`ll have to work for a living and wont be able to fit in their 2nd and 3rd jobs !!!

Combining the fire and rescue service with the ambulance service isn't a good idea in my opinion. They take very different sorts of people to do each, I certainly wouldn't want to work as part of an ambulance crew, and the one guy that was already a paramedic couldn't hack the core skills course to become a retained firefighter. With regards to the comment about cutting roofs off when you don't need to, I'm not sure the poster really has the slightest clue what they are talking about. Cutting a car up is a bit of a pain in the arse, and not something that would be done other than when in accordance of the guidelines the fire service has to adhere to. If there is even a suspected spine injury and the person just gets pulled out through the door, who do you think gets the blame if they end up crippled? And as an above poster pointed out, a lot of the fire and rescue service's work is about fire prevention, they are required by law to do this and the results have been incredible, deaths in house fires have fallen dramatically and this is a direct result of the work that the brigade does. Ultimately though, things do catch fire and when they do, believe me you want a dedicated team of professionals readily available to save you, your loved ones and your property

I think at an on-the-ground level, you're absolutely right about not combining the fire and ambulance services, but would it not make sense as soon as you get above the level of the people actually doing the front line work?

After all, if you are frequently going to have both services attending the same incidents, does it not make sense to have one organisation coordinating the responses? That's very different to expecting firefighters to be able to then resuscitate the people they've pulled out of a burning building, or paramedics to put their patients on top of a 500 gallon water tank in the back of an ambulance.

Our local services now share the same building, vehicles, staff and offices. Step in the right direction. Plenty of chat about the two services under one management chief.

You seem to have some problem with firefighters having other jobs too? Why wouldn't they, shift patterns allow it and the majority of firefighters outside big towns and cities are retained anyway, working for the brigade for an absolute pittance given what they are expected to do. I guess in your world it's just a bunch of blokes lazing around, drinking tea and becoming rich from their endeavours, the reality couldn't be much more different from that. Also take into account that any firefighter can injure themselves very easily and have their career ended before time, it makes sense to have something else to fall back on

They just couldn't wait, like kids with a new present

Having said that and joking aside. they did a geat job in getting her out and treated her like she was a dozen loose eggs.
Wont hear a word said against them EVER
