Listing might've finished after your message but before his reply and he didn't see your offer until it had already sold so no choice but to reject the offer?

The starting price is irrelevant though. I quite often get stupid offers from people who think the starting price is somehow closely connected to what the item is worth. The OP made a serious offer which reflected the normal selling price of the item.

It goes both ways. I sold an item recently, which I started off at £50. I got an offer for £7.75

I had very similar a few years ago, I knew an item was worth about 1k and it was at £500 start. I offered 1k to save the hassle as I really wanted it. It was rejected. I won it at £500 when I decided to bid anyway. I hope you bid OP

There' a 50 pence coin with a Buy it Now of 2 million pounds.

I'm thinking of offering 49p, as there's free postage.
