Shopping at Aldi compared to others. £42 saving.

I went to Aldi to do a weekly food shop for the first time today.
We normally get a delivery from ocado or morrisons.

I've done a like for like after my shop as close as I can and the only difference I can see is the fact aldi charged me £6.79 for something I didn't buy.
This included me selecting everything own brand that wasn't branded from aldi.

I am now officially converted. (if I can be bothered to go)

All in all.
£112. 39 at Aldi.
£155.37 at Ocado. (not including my amazing new thermal t shirt either)

That's a pretty big difference no matter what and the food I have tried so far from Aldi seems to be pretty decent.
That's a circa £40 saving every week!!!

Aldi is great for meat, veg and other small bits, but other branded things we usually go elsewhere.

Great for fruit, meat, veg, wine, cheese, fruit juices, and the really berry granola. Anything branded I get from Sainsbury or Waitrose.

To be honest I don't walk around Aldi or Lidl and see the customers any different to Tesco or any of the other main supermarkets.

It doesn't seem to be the most popular for alcohol purchases either.

We always find that the fresh produce isn’t quite as fresh as the bigger chains and tends to go bad/off quicker - but that could just be our local Aldi/Lidl

Not much. We find Aldi better for basics and staples, and Lidl better for interesting and ‘posh’ stuff.

Are the till staff in Aldi/Lidl specifically trained to throw the shopping at you on the tills? Last time half our shopping ended up on the floor. It is much cheaper than the big supermarkets though.

Yes. You're meant to pack away from the checkout, it's that kind of efficiency that keeps the prices down. If it's going on the floor rather than in your trolley then you are pissing around too much!

I much prefer Lidl because the fruit and veg is ready to eat as opposed to under ripe from the major supermarkets. The bread is good and items are high quality, milk is much cheaper at £1.02 for 2 litres for example.

Mrs Robbo wont set foot in the place, she regards Lidl as nothing more than a food bank for people whose benefits havent been sanctionned yet.

I find that too, but I went to buy unwaxed lemons from Sainsbury's earlier and my OH told me we already had them from Aldi at half the price.

We bought some Cod Loin from Aldi too and it was very good.

It is very weird on your first visit.

I had to ask the woman next to me in the car park where to put the trolley as I couldn't see the place you normally put them and she said I have to take it back to the entrance and they do it to save money on employees.

The guy at the checkout said they have targets of 1,000 items every hour. No idea if that's a lot but the way they do it is very off putting at first.

I don't like the way it is but then again I haven't done an actual food shop for years.

Lidl bakery items are nice. Crusty loafs etc. But I only buy them early doors 'cos I don't like the idea of dozens of folk breathing/coughing all over uncovered items.

I don't think either of them has the choice to make you spend as much but the staples are fine.

We go to Aldi in Spain a lot when we are over there. Much more civilised than the UK, they don't seem to do council over there.

We do quite a big % of our shopping g at Aldi. But a full shop just isn't possible yet.

In the last few weeks I've wanted a hot sauce for wings - something like Frank's. Nothing comparable.

A bottle of BBQ marinade, nope.

Fresh pasta sauce. Nope.

Joint of boneless pork shoulder, nope.

Annoying having to go to one of the big sheds to finish the shop
