Just had a young lad at the door, saying he was on a probation scheme helping him with rehabilitation. I said I was not interested and he went on his way.

My 1st thought was this would never be a thing would it? I now feel a bit stty not at least looking at his wares.

Is it some kind of a scam? Casing houses maybe? Just selling tat with a sob story? Or have I been an arse?

I had it a few of months ago when working from home and couldn't comprehend that I was in a skype meeting when I told them to go away as was in a meeting.

Shouldn't be allowed imo as the last person you want knocking on your door unsolicited is someone just out of prison, probably casing the houses as they go for their mates to come back later.

Risky search of the day right there!

Where i live is getting out of hand. They must have some sort of schedule when the various mobs come knocking. From Jehovas Witnesses, to those selling a magazine to help local <insert cause here>, the SNP, travellers who can seal my driveway for life and will through in a caravan in periwinkle blue etc. etc.

We had one call last year using similar slightly intimidating patter.
I politely declined purchasing (any of the overly priced poor quality items they peddle) and got severe verbal from him, which escalated to threats to property etc.

The lad was pleasant enough.

I felt bad about not helping him, I was not so much worried about the scam so all good biggrin

Nope, they're not legit.

We had some a few weeks ago. My wife was pretty pleasant at getting rid of them and then phoned the non emergency police number.

Not necessarily, some might be but others could be copying.

As others have said it's a scam - no probation service or job seeker's scheme runs anything like this. Apparently they buy the stuff off the "gangmaster" at a flat price and can sell it for whatever they can get. They get driven around as part of the deal. Presumably the mobile number on their "ID card" goes to the gangmaster.

I live on a road with set back houses rather than an estate, majority of people seem to be over retirement age. We get tonnes of them.

My folks live less than a mile away on a modernish estate, they rarely get them.

My gut feeling is they prey on good nature of old people.

My neighbour tells me the previous owner of our house got done over by a cold caller who got let in somehow

I tell them I’m unemployed, blows their sob story out of the water

Door to door sales men I tell them it’s rented

I work work from home some usually clock them before they knock, so try to ignore it now

Thing that's baffling is that only specific roads are in no cold calling zones yet why is it not like that by default for every residential road?

Working from home the amount of people trying to sell you crap is staggering, charities, religions as well as the usual patio and double glazing, gardening etc...

I have an intercom and a sign saying no cold callers and so anyone knocking is told to read the sign.
Lot's of the time it's other neighbors getting deliveries which is just as annoying as I don't get stuff delivered when I'm not in or use the click and collect at my local Sainsbury's so won't accept unsolicited goods for anyone else.
