Having not played Poker for long I thought I knew the hand rankings but now & then I get stumped.
Who wins from the same flush in Hold 'em

Hand 1; Hearts 2 & 4
Hand 2; Hearts 5 & J

5 on the table Hearts 3, 8 & Q, club 7 & K

I thought it was a split pot as both hands have a queen high flush but another player said the player holdng the Jack wins.
Was he correct?

Depends on the rules (of the house)... the thing about poker rules is that there are so many to choose from.

I usually play highest held card wins, so the Jack holder wins all. I believe this is the WSOP rule, but don't have a citation.

Others may have different rules.

According to this page https://www.888poker.com/how-to-play-poker/hands/f...

Hand 2 wins. A QJ flush beats a Q8 flush.

I lost that hand but it was a league game at our local. £5 in and after 3 months the highest points holder gets the chance to go to the Ricoh Arena and play there.
I think 'Redtooth' organise it or have something to do with it.
Out of circa 24 players each week I'm running about 10th in the league so doing ok I think.

Don't play 42 suited unless you're in the big blind in an unraised pot, you'll have a much better chance of getting to the Ricoh that way :-)

A similar situation that gets even more players confused:

Hand 1 QQ
Hand 2 K3

Board AAAAQ

It's not a split pot.

Hand 2. Four of a kind plus a King beats four of a kind plus a Queen.

That's much more clear cut than the OP. Quad aces, king kicker.

Flushes are never usually named by anything other than highest card and suit.

Winning hand is the best five from seven cards.

I’m surprised the question was even asked , if two hands both hold the same suit flush there can only be one winner.

I've been in multiple cash games in casinos with players claiming board quads is always a split pot, don't think I've ever seen someone at the level not understand flush over flush.

I'm playing dealers choice cash tonight, trying to work out who has won what in a four-way allin superstud, plo8 or matrix hand is always fun.

Played again last night, Albeit it a quieter night (18 people were there), I applied a little more restraint and didn't raise on big blind and folded when not blinds, even when holding suited low values (4&2 etc).
Won last night, first time I got to the final three. Won £40! Woohoo!
