I've been meaning to bring this up for a while and I was reminded once again while rewatching the 1st season 4th episode of GoT's. The part where Lord Baelish remarks to Ed Stark, "I hear you're reading a boring book..."
Now, I am aware he didn't mean it in THAT way, he said it out of foreshadowing curiosity, but it does bring me to this post.

I've noticed that books and reading are under scrutiny in the realm of popular culture. Little digs here and there making fun of people who indulge in reading. I hear these snarky comments on cartoons such as American Dad, Family Guy, etc as well as movies and other shows including so-called reality shows.

Each time I witness such a negative remark I cringe as it is then another seed planted in the minds of our youth furthering the contribution to their intellectual decline.

Last one I witnessed was while I was at the laundromat picking up my comforter and they have a television hanging in the corner which was playing I believe Two and a Half Men and it showed these two young women at a bar and a guy is giving one of them the eye. The girl walks over to the guy and says, " I see you like my friend. She's crazy you know, she reads books for fun!"

I know my thoughts on all of this might seem a bit farfetched, especially given the source material i.e. stty television but these are just an example.

One time I walked into a CVS store which is like a Tesco? maybe, and I asked a young girl who worked there where the magazine/book aisle was and she actually laughed and said to me with a big 'i can't believe he just asked me that' smile, "hahah why would you want to look at books?"
I just shook my head and said, "wow... I'll find it on my own, thanks."

As the OP refers to CVS store (quick google reveals CVS is roughly similar to Boots) I'm guessing he/she is a yank... it's therefore acceptable for him/her to use American terms, right?

Rather than being facetious, perhaps it'd be better to discuss the valid points raised?

OP: I'm with you on this one. There have always been stupid and ignorant people, it just seems that there are a lot of them at the moment! Ignore them and carry on reading - I find life is much more pleasant if you don't worry about the opinions of others and just calmly get on with your own life.

'That' Bill Hicks skit was the first thing I though of when reading the OP...

Thank you Faust. I am indeed American.

May I ask what terms are used for laundromat and comforter on your end? I always like to learn anything I can.

I love to read. Always have. I need a bookshelf because I have books scattered and stacked about my room!

I figured such American dad and family guy references to be satarising and totally on-side, but just beyond that it all gets a bit depressingly joyously ignorant.

No problem mate.

Laundromat = Launderette (not that common in the UK as most people have a washing machine in their home).

Comforter = Duvet/Continental Quilt

There is a 'how many books do you own' thread somewhere on PH - sounds like you'd fit right in!

The book in question is about the lineages, births, deaths etc of all of the great houses of Westeros, a fictional place being discussed by fictional characters......

I’d have thought it pretty obvious what the English for laundromat is but I was struggling with comforter. I thought dummy to start with but remembered that’s a pacifier, which probably makes more sense than our equivalent.
Do American homes really all have top loading washing machines though or is that just films?

To get back on topic, it’s very sad that books are becoming a lost medium. Until kindles come with a musty scent I’m not buying one! Although I guess more important is the lack of reading at all these days.. as above though hipsters could genuinely create a revival!

When i was there in the 90's that certainly seemed to be the norm. I assumed it was because the drums were bigger like everything else is over there(apart from pints and gallons) so it makes more sense to have them spinning vertically?

Yes...top loaders are the norm here, and separate top loading dryers.
Apartment buildings (especially older ones) often have large coin/card operated front loaders in the basement, or none at all necessitating trips to the laundromat.
