50% of the population are of below average intelligence
Discussion
What-ho, fellow PH'er's!
I was born and raised in Dagenham, Essex. This makes me uniquely (in so far as that descriptor applies) positioned to have a good ol' cockney stab at dressing down my peers.
As a fairly recent convert to social media; I was amazed at how many of my peers spend a great deal of their life managing their external image. Perhaps that last sentence belongs in the 'council' thread?
Anyway. The above said (it was a 3 bottles kinda lunch); what are your collective thoughts around average intelligence?
Best,
Matt

With the best will in the world Matt, if you were born and raised in Dagenham, Essex, you’re self elevating yourself beyond your wildest dreams if you think that you can have a Cockney stab at anything.I was born and raised in Dagenham, Essex. You can have a Corned Beef City stab if you wish, as when the council estates of Dagenham and Becontree first went up, the urban myth began, that the residents were so poor, they could only afford corned beef.
As for the original question, I was tempted to say that it’s more like more than 50%, but on second thought, I’ll go with 50%.

Surely by the very defenition of an average..... 50% would be below it and 50% therefore would be above it.....
Assuming of course that the measure of "average" is based on population rather than an IQ "target"
Yes, kind of. But it is not a straight line, it's a curve as above. Think of height instead of intelligence. Most people are of average height, some are tall, some are really tall. There are not the same number of really tall people as there are people of average height.Assuming of course that the measure of "average" is based on population rather than an IQ "target"
50% of the population are less than average intelligence, but 68% to 95% of the population are about average intelligence. And of course, that all depends on how one measures intelligence in the first place. You could say that between 68 and 95% of people are 'normal'. The rest are either really smart, or really not.

How smart is the average bear ?
Not as smart as Yogi.BBC give a breakdown here:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/testthenation/iq_norms.shtml
World rankings here:- https://brainstats.com/average-iq-by-country.html
Unfortunately, stupid people tend to have stupid children, and they also tend to have larger families, so the UK trend is probably downward.

That's only the definition of median average. Using mean average there can be far more one side than the other, EG the mean average number of legs for a person is just under 2, most people have more than that.Assuming of course that the measure of "average" is based on population rather than an IQ "target"
Intelligence takes many forms, I have know certifiable geniuses based on IQ numbers who are spectacularly clueless at various things and some right thickos who have some skills in other areas.
IQ tests are a very clumsy way to categorise intelligence, and you can with time, get better scores by practising.
Some kind of a referendum is a much better way to work out who is stupid

so average depends on which one you choose. Assuming the OP is referring to the mean, then by definition as someone pointed out 50% below average 50% above, assuming nobody falls exactly on the mean.
