Today I have filled the car with interesting articles cut from magazines and newspapers by my parents from when they married in 1949 until my dad died in 2011. My mum continued to add some until she died in March. There's no system; there aren't even themes. The full colour record of a national event is with tips on pruning. A novelty birthday cake is cheek by jowl with fuel conservation. I have no idea why some were kept at all. Most are in poor shape as mum and dad moved house several times. Sometimes it's the whole magazine but without knowing which article it was saved for, I'm in the dark. At the tip I will have to post them a few at a time through a narrow slot. I may be some time.

I remember my mum making a fantastic chocolate cake when I was a lad. Mum has since lost the recipe but she remembers it came from a magazine in the early ‘70s.
Is the recipe in the pile your mum kept?

Kind of you to offer, Dicky, but you're gonna need a bigger car!
I really must have a good clearout.

And then get rid of some of this stuff I've been hoarding since our last move in 1975 rolleyes

It has taken 2 years to clear my mum and dads home, managed to get the oddities down to two plastic crates.

I particularly love that dad had kept every payslip all neatly filed in brown envelopes by tax year, I never knew he did this, but I use the same method.

Found a menu from a cruise my mum went on in 1956 then the postcards to her parents from all the different ports she stopped in, then the pictures, then her old uni friends sent me all the letters mum had written to her, which included details of the cruise, in all the time I spent with mum she never mentioned a cruise.

Because she didn't go with your Dad.

I have a garage full of stuff so come and fill yer boot (s)

It's amazing how much stuff you accumulate. We completely cleared it about 4 years ago, took nearly 3 days of continuous tip runs and now it is full yet again.

I don't work Tuesdays so use that day as a chore day, our local tip is no longer open Tuesday; I found out when I'd broken up a bed and loaded the car up with it, I arrived and it was shut!!

There is Sunday, however I work every 2nd Sunday and generally have very little spare time so I like to spend Sunday with the wife and dogs, as opposed to queuing for miles with everyone else to get into the local tip.

I'm going to have to get one of the brown garden bins that the council offer, however I begrudge spending £38 pa for one, given I spend enough on council tax already.

So can you swing by and pick up my grass clippings?!

My Mum is a hoarder at the best of times. Her Dad died 15 years ago. Her Mum 4 and when they cleared their place to sell it. She STILL hasn't gotten rid of a significant amount of it. Shes too sentimental about stuff that's ste. OR she thinks things are worth "something to someone" but wont let me help her sell it on eBay. Occasionally the charity shop gets items they will end up chucking themselves! laugh

In X years time, I'm going to have to book 2 weeks off work, rent a transit and get a couple of skips to clear their house for selling! (probably on my own since my brother will not want to do it!)

We have a room with an intractable damp problem called the 'hobby room' so that's where stuff gets dumped if we haven't anywhere better to put it.

Once a year we just take it all to the tip if we have forgotten about it.

I investigated how much a standard sized skip would cost.

£899.00. yikes

One of the few disadvantages of living in the middle of nowhere.

Yebbut, you can burn stuff.

I am not in quite the remote spot you are, but am able to have some epic fires. smile

Living in a forest... in a wooden house - burning not an option!

No she went on her own 15 years before she met my dad, given he died in 2008 she had plenty of time to mention it, she had few stories she would roll out but never that one, looked like an excellent adventure.
