I'm sitting in the vet's waiting room waiting quietly with Sparkle (the cat) to get her booster jabs.

Of the dozen or so people also waiting, there are four who can barely speak coherently who just have no control of either their animals or their talking volume.

This isn't the first time I've noticed it in public places.

Why is it that that thickos have absolutely no control over how loud they talk? furious

I know a perfectly intelligent person with a voice that can split concrete. It seems like a curse to me. They can't impart any information discreetly.

I’ve always assumed it’s because they are not bright enough to monitor how loud they are and how it can interfere with other people

I know a family who are a bit dim, you can get in their car and the blowers are on full, hot air blasting, you comment it’s hot and they agree, windows down, ten minutes later you comment it’s cold, you can see where this is going

They always seem to have the rear wiper going, fog lights etc

I'm going to guess that both traits have the same root cause. Upbringing.

Parent's who wont tell their kids they're being too loud are likely to ignore poor study habits or worse, ingrain their own bad habits (more often than not, entitlement) into their kids.

The loudest person I know is also the dumbest, Labour-supporting militant feminist I have ever had the miss fortune to cross paths with. I wouldn't mind if she could have a coherent conversation about her points of view. But she trots out utter crap and then slips into abusive mode because you don't agree with her.

She is loud to a point where it becomes absolutely ridiculous. I get a headache, others complain. No one else within earshot (a long way) can get a word in> She just likes the sound of her own voice. Must do, its the only thing anyone can here.

So yes, thick people make a lot of noise. Why? I have no idea. But I know I won't associate with said person again after her last visit.

I'll counter this with being sat in a restaurant or pub on a number of occasions by quite a well to do group (i.e.toffs) and one of those always has a loud voice / annoying laugh. Usually speaking loudly as they probably want to be overheard when talking about Tarquin's private schooling or some such.

But then I guess class, wealth and intelligence don't always go hand in hand either.

I would guess its overcompensating for their stupidity. Being loud perhaps subconsciously diverts attention away from it?

The slower the brain is the less that gets thought about before the mouth opens. This means appropriate volume is way too far down the list to ever be considered by some.

Lack of self awareness. Look at the people who have loud keyboard clicks on their phone turned on and use it in public, and blast music from it through the speaker instead of using headphones.

Cretins, the lot of them.

I have a friend, who while reasonably bright will verbalise any thought, anything at all. I wish they'd filter it a bit, or at least ome sort of live delay between mind and mouth.

It really is verbal diarrhea, sometimes offensive.

"An empty vessel makes the loudest noise; they that have the least wit are the loudest babblers". Plato I believe.

The one that gets me at the moment - we're currently in an open hotdesking office, which has pluses and minuses. However, people Skyping cannot keep their voices down, seems to be a headset "I can't hear the rest of the room, therefore they can't hear me" mentality, oh and I MUST SHOUT SO MY LISTENER REALLY UNDERSTANDS HOW RIGHT AND CLEVER I AM.

I really don't want to know a) whether PN15 flanges are code compliant or not, b) whether Joe's persistent medical problems with his recurrent diarrhoea and wandering pancreas are grounds for capability dismissal, c) that our division is being sold off to Wxxx Pxxxxx but don't let the staff know as they'll leave before working for that bunch of ste and then we'll have no business to sell, though I did find it interesting that one of the senior managers is referred to by her staff as "Miss Gadolinium" as 'everything she touches she poisons' (Gadolinium being a poisonous metal element.

It is more a matter of simple manners to me - some people have none therefore their volume control does not appear to work properly. A case in point was the other afternoon in a beer garden, lots of us enjoying the sun, but we all got to hear the telephone conversation of a lady who decided she needed to chat on speakerphone. Her conversations were sadly gossip and not interesting but still she felt we all wanted to be involved.....

I know someone like that.

He could do a one hour monologue about his trip to the sink from the other side of the bathroom whereas if I'd been running Burundi for a year and someone asked me what it was like I might give an approving nod.

I can't really tolerate being in the same building as him any more unless he's unconscious.

I have an in-law who’s like this. She’s as nice as anyone you could meet but she never stops talking, and most of what she says is simply unnecessary eg. giving a running commentary on what she’s doing to no one in particular. Just to make it worse she has a piercing voice that travels throughout a house. She’s perfectly intelligent though so that’s not the issue.

I suspect that the kind of people the OP refers to are so loud because they were brought up in families where no one really cared about etiquette or simply being nice to each other or to other people. It’s not their problem if they annoy anyone.

Depends how you have been brought up.

And also if you are happy being the centre of attention.

How many times do you hear people fake drumming or doing things to try and get attention, as others say, shouting on phones, loud clicks on phones, music blaring.

it is simply rude and that comes from parents, says all you need to really.

I think there is a chance that some people are 'loud' because they have hearing impairment and cannot judge how loud they are speaking. This is certainly true in my case.

I am always getting told off by my family for saying embarrassing things at inappropriate volumes.
